Updated: Toe Surgery on Friday

I'm going in for toe surgery on Friday to remove parts of my big toenails to fix my chronic ingrown toenails...

Getting anxious about the injections to numb my toes. That area is so tight and has so many nerve endings. Of course I read too many things on the internet and they say the pain is excrutiating.

I know I'll feel 100% better in 2 weeks, but just now I just want it over with. Chat Icon

Thanks for allowing the vent.

Re: Toe Surgery on Friday

I have had 2 or 3 ingrown toenail surgeries.
One when I was in 4th grade which would be about over 20 yrs ago and the last one about 4 years ago.

I think they spray your foot with a numbing spray b/f they inject you.

Good luck with it all & you'll feel better in the long run.

PS they used to put a little curtain over the foot - that to me was worse...Sitting there wondering what was going on behind the curtain.

Numbing spray would be good! It's weird, I usually don't mind this type of stuff. Typically I'll watch when they take my blood, tell them what veins are better, etc Chat Icon But for some reason this needle in the toe thing is getting to me. Get me away from the internet!!

As to the little curtain, I was thinking about bringing a magazine, and just reading that to distract myself, otherwise I know I'll be both wanting and dreading to see at the same time.

I hope I can convince him to do both at the same time, I don't want to go thru this twice...

Re: Toe Surgery on Friday

I work for a DPM, and I had one taken out 2 years ago, and it hurts. Sorry to be a downer here- there is no way they can get it in fast either becuase of the area. Try to breathe thru your nose, tell your dr. you are scared of pain, maybe he/she will numb it, and maybe they will talk to you to keep you distracted, or ask for somene to go in and hold your hand while you are getting the injection. I threatned my boss by telling him I know where he lives and he better not hurt me anymore- by getting the ingrown out, it will be better- ask if he can get rid of the border permnantely so you do not have to go thru this again. I hope you feel better. Chat Icon PS maybe take some advil before hand ( 1/2 Hr before) - that is what I do before I get dental work done.Chat Icon

Thanks, that's a good idea about taking something beforehand. Even if it really won't help physically it will be a mental help. Chat Icon He said he is going to use a chemical on my nailbed and root so it does not grow back again. Sure, no open toed shoes for me anymore, but at least I won't be in pain 24/7.

One thing I do to distract myself from needles is to do something complicated in my head. It helps to tell the doc about this ahead of time and do something like count out loud backwards from 100 or 1000. If that's not complicated enough for you, try to say the alphabet backwards or count backwards by 3s from 100. The doctor will just do the needle whenever and you really won't even notice.

I went through a period where I had to have blood drawn from my arm every week and another where I had to get period shots in my back. This has helped me and I've gotten over my fear of needles.

GOOD LUCK! Even if it hurts, it'll be momentary and then numb!

I had that too - they put something in there so it doesn't grow back.
Haven't had any issues in a long time.
Note to self, don't give your self a pedicure.
That's my note to myself!

Good Luck!

Re: Toe Surgery on Friday

I'm back, and the injections weren't too bad. They used the numbing spray, and really didn't hurt until he turned the needle 90 degrees to get to a different part of my toe. And he did it with all 4 needles. Chat Icon Overall it was not as bad as I expected. Thanks for everyone's advice and hugs.

The numbing is starting to wear off now, and the pounding is starting to begin, but not too bad yet. I have my tylenol with codeine ready if I need it.

I just forgot to ask how long I should keep the bandage on for - he said soak 2x a day and to put a bandage on. I have an appt in 10 days for a followup so I guess I'll keep bandaging till then.
