Re: Lisbon or Madrid - any suggestions welcome!
if I had the choice to go back to either, I'd chose Lisbon.
I loved Portugal. it's a bit poorer, rawer and not as touristy...but I loved the "feel" of it more than Madrid, especially.
Madrid is my least favorite of all spanish cities, though you should see it just for the Museums.
they are so different I think...it's hard to say.
your money would also go farther in Portugal.
tough choice Pork.

Madrid was not a favorite of mine so I would choose Lisbon (though I've never been).

Re: Lisbon or Madrid - any suggestions welcome!
I was in Spain this past April and although Spain was beautiful, I have to admit that Madrid was my least favorite city out of the European cities I have been to and by far the ones I spent time in during that vacation...
Possibly the weather, possibly the fact that I disliked the hotel, possibly because I was forced to visit family instead of just enjoying...
On the plane home I sat next to a woman to was traveling alone and she had been to Lisbon, Morocco, and several Spanish cities ...SHE seemed to LOVE Lisbon and Morocco-
I would go to Lisbon if I were in your shoes!
Edited for spelling

I would probably go to Lisbon, although I've never been (yet!). Madrid was just "okay" to me - and like a PP said the least favorite of the many European cities I've been to. Now Barcelona on the other hand...I would move to. Happy planning!

Re: Lisbon or Madrid - any suggestions welcome!
I love Lisbon. I have been there quite a few times (we went to Estoril/Cascais every year for our holidays when I was a kid). There is so much to see in the area around Lisbon and it has so much history, yet is a very cosmopolitan city. We even rented a car once and went to Porto and Fatima for the day.
I thought Madrid was just okay, but I was there over Christmas and it felt nothing like it there, which I think spoilt my impression of it.

My boss is Portuguese and tells me all about it, he's there now, goes every year for a month.
He raves about Portugal and tells me I have to go, so I guess my vote is for Lisbon!
And pork is popular in Portugal.......

Re: Lisbon or Madrid - any suggestions welcome!
I love both cities -- but had fun family showing me around in Madrid so we didn't do touristy stuff (I was living in Seville).
Lisbon - I do think you will get more bang for your buck. I love the tram and the castle. But I think I prefer the surrounding areas -- Cascais especially, and Sintra.
How long are you going for??

Although I've never been to Spain, we went to Portugal last year and absolutely loved it. Depending on how much time you have I'd recommend a few days in Lisbon and a few days in Cascais/Estoril (we stayed two nights in Cascais). We rented an apartment in Lisbon through VRBO which was gorgeous, inexpensive and perfectly located right near Bairro Alto...if you are interested in the info let me know.

Re: Lisbon or Madrid - any suggestions welcome!
DH's family is in Madrid and while I do love it there, it's not my favorite city, but I don't pass up the chance to go either but I would love to see Lisbon, I used to work for an airline that handled the Portuguese airline and a lot of my coworkers visited and loved it.

Re: Lisbon or Madrid - any suggestions welcome!
MADRID!!
I went to both Madrid and Lisbon for the first time in April
I couldnt have been more disappointed in Lisbon. I was so excited about going there and it was always on my top 5 places to go.
Disappointment! It was ugly, the people were mostly cold, there wasn't a ton to see/do there, it was kind of boring, and they really didn't take advantage of being a city by the water, if that makes any sense. I had envisioned a magical waterfront city with great food, drinks, etc. and got "blah", it was depressing there.
Madrid, however was AMAZING. I thought I wouldnt like it at all because it wasn't "exotic" enough if that makes any sense. The food was fantastic, the people were so great, the tapas YUM. Such a fun, walkable city with such pretty architecture, an upbeat feeling and lots to do and see.
We have never, ever talked about going back to a place we've visited because there is "so much out there in the world to see", but Madrid has changed that.
