UPDATED WITH LONG REVIEW!!!!New Hibachi Place in Selden?
Anyone know if it is open yet or when?
Updated with Review:
Ok…Its been a week since DS (14 months), DH and I went to Nishiki and I would have posted a review sooner, however my last two LONG reviews were gobbled up by the NOT LOGGED IN FAIRY (note to TPTB – why don’t you fix this already?????). So, I am now being smart and typing it up in Word and will just copy and paste it…
NYE Review: I had made a reservation the night before and was told that 5pm would be a good time to come. I told them that I needed a highchair and they informed me that they only have 4 for the whole restaurant. (So if you plan on just dropping in, you should be aware that during the busy times, they may not have one for you if you need it). I am only reviewing the sushi bar side of the restaurant since I opted out of the hibachi as I work in the legal field and have seen that hibachis and infants don’t mix. In between the two sides there is a bar area that was packed but we did not drink any alcohol so I can’t comment on that either.
It is only fair for me to state that we always try different sushi places (on long island and in NYC) and in our opinion, they always pale in comparason to Kotobuki. I know it’s not fair to constantly compare the two but I cant help it. I feel that for the quality of the food and the quantity they give you, there’s no beating it. Please note that I only feel this way about their raw food. Personally I think for cooked Japanese, you can do better….ok ok….this is NOT a review of Kotobuki, but I did try to order something comparable to Sushi for 2 since that is what we get most often. I also wound up ordering things that I would normally NEVER order out in consideration for DS. We wound up getting Edamame and Pork Gyoza for an appetizer. The edamame was warm and salty and GOOD…wish it was a bigger portion though. The gyoza was tasty and the dipping sauce was yummy. Next we ordered a sweet potato roll, California roll, spider roll and two piece sashimi of egg omelet. I wasn’t a fan of any of them and should have just saved my money because DS just squashed the heck out of them and threw them on the floor. Typically at Kotobuki the egg omelet is warm and I think it threw him off. Usually the spider roll is one of my favorites but I didn’t like it here. It was skimpy and oily and lacked much taste.
For “dinner” we ordered Nishiki Sushi (4 pieces each of tuna, salmon, yellowtail and fluke) and Sashimi Dinner (18 pieces of assorted raw fish). These came with soup and salad. DH is more of a fan of miso soup than I am and he said it was “weak.” Almost like it was watered down. It also didn’t have “chunks” of tofu in it like at Kotobuki (which would normally be favorable for me but I was hoping to feed them to DS who eats it like cheese. I took a spoonful and left it. I absolutely LOVE kotobuki’s ginger dressing but it was only “ok” here…typical Japanese ginger dressing.
The dinners came out and were very “artistically” served. The sashimi was served on shaved ice with some funky simulated “ice cube” that made the whole bowl glow with color. As far as the raw fish goes, it was very fresh and very yummy!
For all of the above, our bill came out to a little over 80 dollars. There was a mix up with our check (in our favor) and honest DH went and had it corrected. The manager/owner? came back with our corrected bill and thanked us for being honest.
All in all I would give the place a B+. I still prefer Kotobuki but Nishiki is a good sushi/sashimi substitute as it is only five minutes from our house and it much more kid friendly than Kotobuki (the do not have highchairs at all). I look forward to going back and trying the hibachi if we can ever get a babysitter! If you have any questions, let me know!

Re: New Hibachi Place in Selden?
They opened last week but I haven't been there yet. So funny, I was just thinking about it today as I drove past. I wonder if they have a full bar.

Well they are open and I made reservations for tomorrow (on the sushi bar side, not the hibachi side). I'll post my review afterwards. that it is a decent substitute for Kotobuki

Hi, dying to know your review of the new place! Did you go? Honestly, I don't think there will EVER be a substitute for Kotobuki:)
