UPDATE:saved a kitten... now need some advice
So yesterday I was walking to the train station for work, and i see a tiny kitten run across Northern Blvd and almost get hit by a car. It runs up the block (which is all commercial) and is looking for a place to hide, but of course can't find one. She dropped to the ground and just started shaking. So i picked her up and brought her back to our apartment. I put her in the bathroom and closed the door so my cat couldn't get in. Brought her to the vet, and no fleas, just dehydrated so they hooked her up to an IV. Now, they can't test for feline leukemia for another 2weeks. The dr said if he tested her now, theres a chance it could be a false negative. So right now I have the 2 cats separated. This little girl is 5 weeks old. She's completely scared. If you try to pick her up she hisses, but will let you hold her and pet her. She just shakes non stop. What can i do to get her used to being around people? She's finally eating, and she used the litter box I left for her! I just hate that she feels so scared. She cried a bunch last night. Any advice? I have someone willing to adopt her once we know she doesn't have any diseases, so I'll have her for another 2 weeks.
UPDATE:
Well, Lizzie was adopted out to her forever home. She made such huge leaps in her behavior. The last morning I had her, she climbed on my lap and nuzzed up against my face. She's definitely a sweetheart. It was so tough to say goodbye to her, I cried the whole time, but she's got a great owner and she'll be the only pet and run of an entire apartment. I wish we could have kept her, but we're in the process of moving to a house, have a baby on the way, and already have one cat, so I know this was the right thing to do. I work with her owner, so at least I can get daily updates on her. He said she's doing well, and exploring her new home.

Re: saved a kitten... now need some advice
Awww that is so great of you to rescue her
We also rescued our cat when he was 5 weeks old. He would do the same thing that you described your kitten is doing.
We just made sure to constantly hold him - pet him, nuzzle with him, talk to him. He even slept in between us in the bed (after we had him checked for ticks etc)...this would stop the crying. He was still a baby - so they miss the comfort of their mother. Basically, be a susbstitute.
She should eventually calm down once she gets use to the new environment.
Leaving him for the day while we went to work was hard - you could hear him crying as you were walking out. We would leave a blanket on the floor & some toys to keep him occupied. They get use to it & find their own way to keep themselves entertained.
Our cat is such a mush ball now - he is constantly on our laps, at our feet & looking for love.

Re: saved a kitten... now need some advice
thanks so much for that!!! I hope this is what this little girl turns out to be like.
I'll continue to do what we've been doing. I just hate the fact that she's completely scared of us when we just want her to know that she's safe now. At least her hisses don't do anything, i think its just for show.

Re: saved a kitten... now need some advice
Awwww- so nice of you to rescue her. So sad that she was all alone like that.
I think you just have to spend a lot of time with her... hold her, pet her, speak softly... she needs to learn to trust humans - and handling her a lot at this young age is the best way.
She will calm down eventually- she's just traumatized now- especially because she had to go to the vet, have an IV, etc- I can imagine that would be very scary for her.
Keep her confined like you have her- she will feel safer in a small confined space... I know you said she is in your bathroom, but is she had someplace to hide she would probably feel even better...underneath something, behind something...
Good luck- post some pics!! I'd love to see this tiny little cutie!

Yea the hissing is just for show. She's scared & probably has never had any contact with humans this close.
As long as your comfortable holding her -try & grab her. If she hides, get her. We got scratched a few times when we got him & would try to pry him from where ever he was hiding.
She'll be running to you in a few days. If you have any string - try luring her towards you. Kittens are very curious & will forget that its you dangling the string at her.
Lots of interaction truly helpS them...and affection GOOD LUCK

Re: saved a kitten... now need some advice
What a beautiful little girl and what an amazing person you are to rescue her like that! We rescued a little one once from a Costco parking lot and she did the hissing thing too. It's just because they are scared. Spend as much time with her as you can and she will start to feel more comfortable. Now ours is a big mush. Good luck!

aww thanks for asking. Well last night was TONS of crying, but she's definitely less scared. She'll sit with you and let you pet her. She still hisses when you pick her up, but its MUCH better. There was an incident though, she discovered how to get on the window ledge and tried to claw through the screen. So now we have her in a big dog crate with her litter, food, and toys. I think thats part of the reason she's crying more, she wants more freedom. She'll be moving to her new home over the weekend or early next week, so hopefully the transition for this little kitty will end soon!!!
