Upsetting call last night
My OB's associate called to tell me they got the results of the AFP - that I took in DECEMBER - yesterday. THe results said "abnormal" - and nothing more. He says that since my Ultrascreen results were so good tho, that this shouldn't be a concern. However, he did request that I go in again this morning so they could run the AFP again, this time using the same lab that did the Ultrascreen.
I didn't sleep all night...
And the tech who took my blood was an idiot, made me all upset and then couldn't even get my blood. She had to call in her coworker -- I TOLD her I had small veins, why? For fun? No, so the BEST phlebotomist there could stick me, not some flunkie....

I would be completely stressed too, I'm sure I just know that there have been a number of posts on this site from women who have gotten scary results from the AFP, because the tests were inadvertently contaminated (a lot of them said they used Quest Labs). So, maybe that can give you a little reassurance.
When will you hear back about the new test?

Re: Upsetting call last night
Oh Kara, I'm sorry you are going through this.
WHEN will doctor's offices learn that they need to tell us more when they call with that kind of news!?!?!
And WHEN will the stupid lab techs start listening to us when we tell them about our veins?!?!
I swear, there should be a "frequent sticker" club and once you've had blood drawn more than 50 times you should be given a free pass to direct your phlebotomist anyway you see fit!!!
That everything is cool with Baby P and the tests come back a-okay.

Re: Upsetting call last night
UGH!
PLEASE kara, DO NOT get upset. Everyone I know, about 12 people had an abnormal AFP and not ONE OF THEM had anything wrong with their babies. NOT ONE.
I too had a horrible AFP result with my first PG and it was wrong.
Thats why I choose NOT to do it this time around, cause I couldnt handle the stress.
This test has the HIGHEST false positive ( abnormal) test rating ever, and will be phased out in the next 10 years to the ultrascreen which is now known as the better and more accurate results.
Also, your level 2 would have SHOWN any AFP like abnormalities, such as a spinal issue....and it was PERFECT!
You know I dont sugarcoat anything ..Im 100% sure your baby is FINE!
BUt Im sure your nervous regardless and here are a ton of hugs

Re: Upsetting call last night
Thanks ladies -- I feel much better now. As a matter of fact, it WAS Quest labs. My Dr. says they are not using them anymore -- and neither is my insurance. I guess there is a reason for that!!
I feel better - the 2nd sticker today told me that they put "abnormal" for NO OTHER REASON than my age!!

Don't worry! It is just a screening. It is NOT accurate!

Re: Upsetting call last night
I had a problem with my Ultrascreen because of my age only. Thats why mine was "abnormal" too. I am surprised they had you re-take the AFP though, because you have a certain window of opportunity to take this in. If you had the first one in Dec and they only told you now to do it again, I would be questioning the timing. Dont get upset if this comes back wonky too. The Level II will be your best determining factor anyway. With all the false results on the AFP I am surprised they still do them at all...
Good Luck Fran

Re: Upsetting call last night
Like so many others have said, false positives are sooooo common! With a great level II, I woulsn'd worry too much - but then again, that's really easy for me to say!

My friend just went through this and had an amnio and level 2 sono, only to find out everything is fine. I think they did it cuz of her age also (41)

Re: Upsetting call last night
The same thing happened with my AFP results - my statistics were higher than they should be for my age, but since my ultrascreen came out fine, my dr. did not push the amnio, and I did not do it - chances are everything is ok - they need to factor in EVERYTHING - AFP, as well as ultrascreen - if the u/s comes up ok, they don't get that concerned!
