using the word "potty"

Do you think that a parent of an 8.5 yo should stop calling going to the bathroom the "potty"?

I must have stopped using the word when my kids were 4 or 5!

Re: using the word "potty"

I noticed this is a huge pet peeve of some of the teachers I work with in the K & 1st Grade classrooms. I think they prefer and require more mature vocabulary from their students. I have been transition my 4yo away from "potty" and towards using the word "bathroom". An 8yo should be able to use the word bathroom instead of potty. Does that child say "potty" with everyone or just in the presence of certain individuals?

Do they have younger siblings? So she just calls it that for everyone That would be the only thing I could think of,

Agreed! Id rather that than "i have to pee" which is what a lot of my students come in saying. That is just gross!

My 4 year old says potty sometimes and says bathroom more now. But ill admit i often use the word potty when im with my kids.

using the word

I am in the 'who cares' category. I have a 5 year old and an almost 3 year old and I use 'potty'. My 5 year old sometimes says 'bathroom' but usually potty. Are people really going to think badly of me for using 'potty'??

Not at all...when they are that young! I mentioned i used the words when my kids were younger as well but what age do you stop? It was strange to hear a parent use it with a 9yo. My 9 and 11 yo DDs thought so too.

just crashing, I hear many adult ladies at work say potty or I have to go pee (pet peeve of mine) I hate that word. but
I would think its odd for a mom to say it to her 9yr old but maybe she has not transitioned to the next level, maybe she's not ready

Your kids probably thought it was strange because you thought it was strange. If we, as adults make a big deal about these silly stupid dumb things that don't even matter, we are teaching our kids to nitpick other kids. Again, who cares what they call it?

Agreed. I still say potty at times. And use it as a verb occasionally tooChat Icon

Idk why anyone would think twice at what another family would call the WC Chat Icon

Yes. 100%. It sounds completely ridiculous. I have a friend who does this with her nearly 8 year old, BUT, she also has 3 younger children so I kind of give her the benefit of the doubt there (though, I still think it sounds so ridiculous when she says it).

Re: using the word "potty"

OMG I must have kept using this word until I was like sixteen. My mom would have corrected me if she heard it but all of a sudden one day I said something about the potty and my mom's like don't you think you're a little OLD for that term??

LOL!!!! It never dawned on me!! But I was a teenager and an idiot Chat Icon

So yeah, strange. Restroom, bathroom, toilet, etc.

Re: using the word "potty"

I never called it that, even for my dogs when I was training. Just recently my 6y/o started saying that, someone in school must be saying it. I corrected her and told her we don't call it that, that's a baby term for bathroom. That she needs to say she needs to use the bathroom, too old to say Potty. I hate the term, to be honest, other than for babies, toddlers at most.

using the word

Why does it matter to you? I don't understand. Obviously it's not your children so why judge what vocabulary other parents use? Sounds judgmental to me. And I don't think encouraging your kids to have that opinion is helpful either, long term.

Re: using the word "potty"

With everything going on in the world who really cares if they say toilet, potty, loo, or bathroom. We are a society too worried about everyone elses business. I mean really.
