Utah goes to 4-day workweek to save energy
I am jealous! I would LOOOOOOVE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!
Starting next month, thousands of government employees will only work 4 days per week, in an effort aimed at reducing energy costs and commuters' gasoline expenses.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Starting next month, it will be "TGIT" for Utah state employees. As in: "Thank God It's Thursday."
In a yearlong experiment aimed at reducing the state's energy costs and commuters' gasoline expenses, Utah is about to become the first state to switch to a four-day workweek for thousands of government employees.

Re: Utah goes to 4-day workweek to save energy
I've responded to similar threads, but I've read many studies that show that 4 day weeks use MORE gas..... on average, people who have the day off drive MORE than when they are parked at work all day. Yes, I know there are people who will say "Well, *I* don't", but as a whole, more gas is used on days off.
We have every other Friday off, and while it's great, the 9 hour days can get to you sometimes. Minimum 10 hour days will really start getting to people. 9-7? Many parents will never see their DC with an extra 2 hours at work....

Yes but I think people would have less of a problem using that gas for recreational purposes as opposed to commuting to work.

Re: Utah goes to 4-day workweek to save energy
i would not like this if it means my other days are longer to make up for the lost day and then how much energy are they saving because all the electricity will be on longer every day

I'll have to ask my dad about this. He and his wife work at Hill AFB, which is right outside Salt Lake City.
They commute together, so they are saving money there, and my dad is a real homebody, so he'd love another day to sit in his recliner each week.

Re: Utah goes to 4-day workweek to save energy
the way I see it, once I'm at work, it's really not a big deal to work an extra 2 hours. I already work 9 hour days b/c I rarely take a lunch break. so really 1 more hour is nothing.
but I can see how this would not be appealing to parents with young children - having to make alternate arrangements for their kids, etc.
but I would LOVE IT!

Bishes...I wish we had a 4-day work week. My boss would never go for that whether the state mandated it or not.

Re: Utah goes to 4-day workweek to save energy
i can see the pros and cons to this... especially for parents (having been a single-parent for so long).
but where i am now in my life, i would welcome a 4-day work week.
there are some people where i work who are putting a plan together to allow us to work from home one day a week.... now, that would be a dream come true for me!

Well that certainly wouldn't work for a lot of parents that rely on daycare. I think it should be optional.

Right, but it still wouldn't work out for many that rely on daycare, so what do those people do? Most daycares close at 6 or 6:30 and I know a lot of parents that struggle to get there by that time, and they get off at 5. It does sound nice for those without a family though or people that have other arrangements for childcare!
