UTI in toddlers? Anyone have experience?
I think DD has a UTI...she spiked a fever yesterday, has been a bit red in the diaper region and is just crying and screaming everytime she has to pee....
Taking her to the Dr. in a little while, and the nurse told me that they might have to catheterize her to get a sample
Anyone's DC have a UTI young?? DD is only two

Re: UTI in toddlers? Anyone have experience?
My dd's had them ,and they used a plastic baggy with tape to catch a specimen .. why can't they do that for you ? a catheter is kind of scary my dd's never had to get one ,and they had quite a few UTI's !! I had to stop bathing them in the tub ,and give them showers instead ! Ever since they haven't had one !! I hope your dd feels better
ETA: the plastic bag is made for young children ..you just place it over the whole are down their ,and it has stick stuff around the edges ! I put a diaper on over it,they forgot about it ,and then would pee !

Re: UTI in toddlers? Anyone have experience?
I thought DD had one a few weeks ago....she had not peed in like 15 hours and the ped said to take her
when they brought in the cathether kit, she freaked, saying "I have to go pee"...we avoided the cathether cause she peed on her own into that bucket thing that they put in the toilet
Turns out she did not have a UTI
Does she pee on the potty? If so, see if you can get a sample that way to avoid the cathether

She does pee on the potty, but not on a regular basis....I'm hoping they'll let us try that or the bag thing before the catheter....

Re: UTI in toddlers? Anyone have experience?
DD had one a week before she turned 1. They did the catheter in the office to confirm a UTI after the urine-collection bag test came back as positive. I was terrified of the catheter, but it really wasn't too bad and was done quickly. She was put on an antibiotic which helped clear it up...definitely necessary since untreated UTIs can harm kidneys. After that, she needed some testing to find out why she had gotten a UTI so young...can give you more of that info if/when necessary.
Good luck!
ETA: The catheter really is necessary if the bag collection comes back with red flags, b/c the catheter is really the only sterile way to collect urine.

Re: UTI in toddlers? Anyone have experience?
Thanks everyone! They put the urine collection bag on, and we "hung out" for about an hour...but nothing. i think it was pinching her, so even though she had to go, she was afraid (we could feel her start to go, then she'd just cry).
So they did the cath...it went pretty quick, but DD was crying so hard, it was awful (on me mostly I think)...
The worst part, is the urine tested clean in the office...they're sending it to the lab for a full culture, so we'll see if they find anything. When we got home, she had a few bouts of diarrehea, that she SCREAMED through...and kept grabbing her diaper area evertyime she had to pee or poop...
The fever appears to be down, so we'll see how she is when she wakes up (she's treating me to a late morning!)
Thanks for the good thoughts!
