Vacation Days
What is your company's policy on vacation days?
Use them or lose them? That is what ours is.
I have an employee with a total of 7 days remaining and he wants to carry them over. I said he could carry over a max of 2 and that he needs to take the rest by December.
He claims the company is 'dictating' when he can take his days?
I appreciate your input.

Re: Vacation Days
Ours are use em or lose em, no carry over. It's very common at companies.

Re: Vacation Days
if we don't use vacation days they automatically get rolled over, up to 40 hours. we can either carry over or get paid out up to 40 vacation hours (or a combination of both). i would be annoyed if i lost unused vacation days. sometimes things come up at work and you just can't take the days off. that happened to me last year.

Re: Vacation Days
Use them or lose them according to the employee manual. But if you don't use them and ask, you can get paid half-time for the unused vacation time. We don't have the option to carry over to the following year.

Re: Vacation Days
We have use them or lose them. We have 2 - 3 week periods where we cannot take vacation at all, no matter what the circumstances.
Those weeks are the week before/after 4th of July - and before/after Xmas.
So.. it stinks.

Re: Vacation Days
Use them or lose them.
ETA: There are several months out of the year that I am not allowed to take time off due to deadlines. Jan-Mar, Apr-May, July-Aug, Oct-Nov. I have to plan my vacations out a full year in advance if I want to take time off and get it approved on on the calendar.

Re: Vacation Days
We can carry over up to 10 days each year.
We can also buy vacation days as well (up to 5 I believe). If you buy vacation, there is a use it or lose it policy.

Re: Vacation Days
Use em or loose em. I know some companies will pay you for time not taken, but not here.
Although I did request to carry a week this year and it was granted. Kind of a story with it, but that's not really the point.

Re: Vacation Days
We used to be able to carry over an unlimited number of days but people were banking weeks of vacation time so they started to pay out unused time this year. The owners eventually want to move to a use it or lose it policy.
How is your company dictating when he can take vacation if it's a stated policy?

he is not understanding that he earned his vacation in 2007, and he must take it in 2007.
he feels he earned it and that he can take it when he wants.

I work for the Federal gov't and have the same policy. 240 hours can be carried over.. anything more you lose by the last pay period.

it's company policy an he has to abide by the rules as everyone else does. Is there a written policy?

Re: Vacation Days
We can roll over half of our vacation days, so if you have two weeks of vacation time that's 5 days.

Re: Vacation Days
I work for the state. They allow you to accumulate to a certain point (I think 30 -40 days) and then state that you need to start to use some, so you don't lose them.

It's called company policy - it's not a dictatorship.
He knew when he got his slug of days that it was a "use or lose" situation. It's his problem.

Re: Vacation Days
We can roll a week over into the 1st quarter but it's really not inforced.
I have 10 days left this year on top of a few personal days. I hope to take them though.
