Re: Vacation Days
I trust he doesn't work in California, where they have laws about this stuff.
DH and I both work for use it or lose it companies. I used to work at a place where you could carry over up to your annual allotment and get paid out upon termination.
Sleeper needs to wake up and read the policy!

Re: Vacation Days
We have the option to buy 5 days to be used the following year. I still really don't know how it works, since I am only there a year, but I also use all my time. At my last company, we had a rolling account and never lost anytime if we didn't use it, it just kept building. There were people there who had like 8 weeks worth of vacation time.

We can "bank" 5 days BUT we can only use them if we are like deathly ill or we go on maternity leave or something.

We can roll over 15 days. We get 25 days a year to use as vacation, personal or sick days.
ETA: The carryover has to be used by June 30th.

Re: Vacation Days
We can carryover 5 days maximum after our anniversary date.
The only state with a vacation policy is California. Once you've earned the day, they are yours. However, you can cap the accrual at 1.5 vacation days over your company's standard vacation policy.
Yes, he's right. The company is dictating when he can take his vacation. They can also, at any time, change their policy to no vacation days. Vacation is a benefit, not an entitlement.

Re: Vacation Days
I have NO CLUE!
I guess I should find out
all I do know is that I accrue vacation time and personal time each month.
re: your employee who claims you are dictating his time off... once again that is an HR issue. you didn't set forth this policy and if he has an issue with it, he needs to address it with HR.

We used to be able to carry over an unlimited number of days but people were banking weeks of vacation time so they started to pay out unused time this year. The owners eventually want to move to a use it or lose it policy.
How is your company dictating when he can take vacation if it's a stated policy?
he is not understanding that he earned his vacation in 2007, and he must take it in 2007.
he feels he earned it and that he can take it when he wants.
This is also by the way, THE SLEEPER sounds like he is a stellar employee

Re: Vacation Days
We get paid out for unused personal and sick time at the end of the year
Unused vacation time gets rolled over to the next year - up to 200 hrs. Once it's over that you loose it.

I work for the state. They allow you to accumulate to a certain point (I think 30 -40 days) and then state that you need to start to use some, so you don't lose them.
Same for me!!

Re: Vacation Days
We can carry up to 400 hours, but after that, you stop accumulating. You don't "lose" them, you just stop earning them after 400 hours.... (I can never imagine racking up 10 weeks! I need time away from work, and even though I carry some, it's never THAT much! )

Re: Vacation Days
I believe we are only allowed to accure so many days. I think 21 days, then you don't earn anymore until you take some time off. So it's sort of a use it or lose it policy.
