Vacation without the kids?
I know this is a personal decision but when do you feel it's okay to vacation without your children - meaning at what age?
Do you think it's better when they are younger and won't remember? Or will you wait until they are much much older?
Does the length of the vacation make a difference (ex - a weekend getaway versus a 7 day vacation)?

Re: Vacation without the kids?
JMO I think that it is totally up to you when you wantto go and its ok to have time away from the kids you need that once in a while to have some adult time and some adult fun to mingle with other adults without the interuptions from the kid. So don't feel like your a babd mom that you want to go away without your child regardless if its for a week or a weekend just as long as you have someone who is willing to take care of the child while your away and the child will be in good hands

I agree - it's whatever works for you. I wouldn't plan a trip before you have the baby. Honestly, I couldn't imagine not going away for a week without kids before I had them. Now that I have mine...well let's just say our first vacation (3 days) in four years without the kids took place this past August.
We try to do one nighters in the city pretty regularly.

Re: Vacation without the kids?
I think it is a totally normal and healthy thing to have a vacation without the kids for adult time. However with that being said, since I work FT and have incredible guilt about the time I am away from the baby I dont think I would go away without her anytime soon. If I was a SAHM I might think differently and let her enjoy a few days with grandma!
ETA I think anytime after 3-4 months should be fine to take a vacation

We are leaving when Jack is 5 months to go a 4 day/3 night cruise. We are covered by insurance in case we need to cancel for Jack. It's also only to the Bahamas so all else fails we can easily get a flight back or Dh can rent a plane and fly us back pretty fast. I'm torn about being excited about it I am and also I'm not looking foward to it too much because I'm used to 24-7 Jack and by myself for the past 4 months. But Dh deserves a vacation and after what he has been through and I deserve one because it hasen't been a easy few months so we figured Jack is young enough not to really notice. He knows my mom well, I trust my mom and after a few weeks of him coming back and being a family were just gonna escape for a few days and make sure were reunited as a couple as well.
My parents never did this even until my brother and I were in college so I feel bad but my parents keep reminding us our situation is alot different then there's and they even think its a good idea to get away for a few days to recharge.
It's short it isn't too far and I know he will be in safe hands so were going.
The only thing that stinks is even though we got a great deal we are upgrading alot to a suite, balcony and going to go all out so our short cruise is ending up more expensive then a longer one but it's money will spent :)

Re: Vacation without the kids?
We went to a wedding in Boston for two nights when Jack was 5 monhts old. It was hard at first not having him with me, but then when we checked into the hotel and went down to the bar for some adult conversation, it felt a little better! I think a one or two nighter here and there is fine when they are babies. But when they are school aged, I'm sure all of our vacations will be family vacations.

DH and I are going to go away for a weekend in the beginning of November. Christopher will be nearing 4 months at that point. DH and I never got to go on a honeymoon, so this will be our "mini-moon".

Re: Vacation without the kids?
Next August, DH and I are going to Hawaii for 10 days to celebrate him graduating law school. Since they don't get to see him much,, my parents will probably come here and stay with him. My ILs live nearby, so they are there to help also.

Re: Vacation without the kids?
MY DH and I went away on our HM when James was 1yr.....it was really hard for us to leave him so young....but we knew that we would never have anothe chance for a HM.
but we did decide afterwards....that any furture vacations will be with our son....at least until he is a teenager...and doesn't want to vacation with us
