I think it depends how much time you spend at the resorts. From what I understand the values are pretty bare boned....no pool slide, smallish rooms, no fridge or coffee maker in the room, the bus stops are uncovered, soap dispensers, they only have a food court and I have read very mixed reviews about the buses & bus sharing among the all stars. If you don't care about any of that, then save the money.

Re: Value vs. Moderate Resorts - Disneyworld
I've never stayed at a moderate, only because I don't think it's worth it since you don't get much more than you would at a value. If I was going to upgrade, I would go for deluxe.
I find the food court to be awesome at Pop Century. Such a great selection for my picky children. The rooms were just redone and are modern. The pool is just fine, didn't miss a slide at all. They do have a kiddie pool area for the little one with water jets that shoot up. We went to the waterparks for real water fun.
You can request a fridge. If you need it for formula/medicine, it's free. If not, it's $10 a day. Many people just bring their own small coffee pot but it's just as easy to swing by the food court on your way to the bus and grab a cup.
Yes, the rooms are small though. But most people that go to Disney spend the majority of their time in the parks, not the room.
Just so you are aware, the All Star resorts share busses, Pop Century does not. If you go on allearsnet.com you can see pictures of all of the resorts.

It really is preference - if you want a basic, motel like room (probably with more kids and more people around) and just a place to sleep then go for a value. If you want nicer, more quiet, more relaxing type accommodations then go with the moderate.

As others have stated, it really depends on your preference and the needs of your family.
There has never been a GREAT difference in amenities when comparing value and moderate resorts - well, until now.
The moderates are undergoing renovation with one of the biggest (and possibly most important) changes being to the bedding. Traditionally, most moderate resort rooms that accommodate more than 2 people have had 2 double beds just as the value resorts have (the only exception being Coronado Springs which had queen beds due to it's designation as a convention hotel). The bulk of those moderate rooms will now feature queen beds too, which can make a huge difference in comfort.
I just stayed at Port Orleans French Quarter which was the first to be renovated and this change alone made an already favorite of mine and my family even moreso. Add that change to the mini-fridge in the room, a feature pool with a slide, and the option of a table service restaurant and it makes the moderate choice all that more appealing.
If you're budget conscious and those little comforts don't really matter to you, then a value will do fine. Again, it just depends on you and your needs and expectations.
If you are considering a moderate, my preference is Port Orleans French Quarter because it such a quaint, small resort and easy to navigate (in addition of course to the new bedding). After that, I would say either Port Orleans Riverside or Caribbean Beach. Both these resorts are very spread out and it can be quite a long walk to the main resort amenities if you are in an outlying building. Riverside should be undergoing renovation now (the new Royal Guest Rooms are part of this project), and Caribbean Beach is scheduled after that.
I'm not yet sure if the specialty rooms (trundle bed rooms at Riverside or Pirate Rooms at Caribbean Beach) will also get the queen beds during this project or if that will come later.
Hope that helps!

That was very helpful! We are considering the French Qtr for the moderate. I just wish they'd publish some deals. We are planning a trip for November.

Re: Value vs. Moderate Resorts - Disneyworld
French Quarter is just such a great resort, and as you can tell from my last post I highly recommend it!
Disney corporate forewarned us last year that they were going to start cutting back on the heavy discounting that they had been doing, and so far they have been pretty much true to thier word.
We've seen a significant decrease in the number of offers announced, and even old favorietes like free dining in August/September has been cut by nearly 3 weeks.
I'm still hopeful that we will see something for October-December, but we'll just have to wait and see.
