Vanderbilt Museum FunFest - Feb 16th-24th.
The 2008 Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum Winter Fun Fest kicks off Feb. 16 and runs through Feb. 24.
The seasonally-themed special program of classes, planetarium shows, exhibits and events on the grounds of the museum is geared toward families.
The Vanderbilt Museum's mansion, grounds and exhibits will be open daily during the Winter Fun Fest from 11:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. General admission is $7 adults, $6 students/seniors and $3 children. During the Winter Fun Fest mansion tours will be available for an additional $3 per person.
The Vanderbilt Planetarium will be offering special shows highlighted by Symphony of the Stars Laser Show that week at 3 p.m. The laser imagery is choreographed to film scores, Broadway musicals and television themes.
The planetarium and daytime laser shows are an additional $3 per person. Evening planetarium shows are $5 adults, $4 students/seniors and $3.50 children. Evening laser shows are $10 adults, $9 students/seniors and $8 children.
The museum is located at 180 Little Neck Road in Centerport.
In honor of President's Week, presidential, royal and regal pieces in the museum's collection will be highlighted, including a portrait of George Washington that will be on exhibit to the public for that week only.
Free, with admission, are exhibits and interactive events, including the Touch Stations in Marine Museum and Sudan Trophy Room, where visitors can look at the museums extensive natural history collection through a hands-on exploration of animal specimens and artifacts.
The Dinosaur Exhibit, featuring life-sized skeletal reproductions of dinosaur fossils and a 16-foot tall T-Rex model, is open for this special week.
A seminar to learn about maple sugaring will be held Tuesday through Friday in the front classroom.
There will be a scavenger hunt for royal, presidential and regal collection pieces in the museum exhibit areas. Hunt forms are available in the planetarium lobby.
The museum's facilities include an historic furnished mansion, unusual life science and ethnographic collections, and a world-class planetarium that offers an unobstructed view of a large portion of the night sky. For more information call 631-854-5579.
