VENT: So AJ spent 2 weeks with my aunt and one thing sorta bad happened...
She had a blast
She got spoiled
I called daily
We went to visit every other day or so for a few hours.
Then there came a day when I called and heard this..
Aunt: Oh she's fine.. we went to the bank with your Aunt N.
Me: wow, that's neat. But you don't have the carseat.
Aunt: oh but Aunt N had one for JR (my cousin's almost 4yr old son).
Me: um...
OK, break for second for back story. I have been fighting tooth and nail about the fact i REFUSED to turn AJ around in her carseat. My aunt feels its cruel to have her face nothing, to have her legs up like that, she's too big, etc.
Aunt: yeah and you know what? she faced forward and loved it
Me: uh (trying not to fight, but HELLO!!?)
Aunt: well she did have fun except she threw up
Me: AJ doesn't throw up (its true)
Aunt: really? cause she threw up alot at the end of the ride
Me: Really, 2yrs and no throw up... ever. She'll cough up phlegm if she's sick but no throw up, ever. (ok once, but she was sick)
Aunt: oh wow, well I cleaned her up and gave her a bath so she's ok
Me: Yeah, but no more forward facing, ever again ok? Maybe she got motion sick
Aunt: Oh, I didn't think of that.
Me: And I haven't seen this seat.. how do I now its even built for AJ's size or weight
Aunt: but JR..
Me: JR is almost 4 (like days away). AJ isn't even 2. Huge difference
Aunt: Really (she's 69yrs old people)
Me: *sigh* Yes really, they've come a long way over the years. Each type of seat is made for age and weight.
Aunt: Oh.
....
I can NOT tell you how freaking ticked off beyond belief I was. I held it together and ended the call nicely but dear lord.. how DARE you take my child out in a forward facing seat even after I've told you NUMEROUS times I am against it. Just cause you heard that so-and-so had an accident with their 2yr old and got rear ended and the kid was 'not even bruised' but forward facing means diddly squat to me my friend.
I chose to be nice about this and just make it clear that to keep AJ from throwing up, lets skip forward facing.
Now she wants to talk her on the bus. *sigh* I'm ok with the bus I guess but my aunt is so ditzy I'm afraid she'll leave her purse behind. She literally forgets her keys and they are in her hand. I can't think about a bus ride with a 2yr old and 'stuff'
Ok.. my vent from AJ's two weeks away.

ETA: from a post below
Ah yes.. I should have said that.
She had one.. in her husband's truck. My carseat is set up for LATCH system in his truck rear facing. Her old 97 Buick didn't have a LATCH system so we vetoed it.
Apparently going to the bank just 'had' to happen. Which isn't true because after that incident she just gave deposits to my aunt to make.
I put that carseat in as soon as we dropped her off. I even offered to get her one for her car but she doesn't see why some fireman has to install it.. can't we just belt it down?
ETA: actually when i suggested we'd get one for her car she said "Great so we can finally have it facing the right way" Grr joking or not, it made me angry so she gets no car seat at all for her car (yet).
Heck I offered to LEAVE my truck (tribute - small SUV) behind for her own use with the Carseat installed! Message edited 7/6/2010 10:12:42 PM.

That is really frustrating that she knew how you felt about rear facing and didn't give it a second thought, but if I was having someone watch my kid for two weeks I would def. give them a carseat (or get one installed) in case of emergencies. I had one installed in my dads car for the 4 days I was going to be in the hospital in case of anything.

ITA
ETA: The car doesn't have to have LATCH to install a car seat.
My DH's BMW doesn't have LATCH in the middle and DD's infant seat was installed despite that. Using LATCH doesn't make it any safer IMO.

I think you sort of screwed yourself here. You cant expect someone to watch a child for 2 weeks and never leave the house. I would have installed one of our car seats in her car, rear facing, with the seatbelt as soon as we got there. Carseats have instructions for both LATCH and seatbelt installation. I would want car seats in both vehicles, in case of emergency.
She's 69 years old so she doesn't get the whole rear facing/forward facing. She just thinks you are being paranoid. Sorry, she went against your wishes.
Prior to having a kid, I would have thought using the existing car seat was safe. I would have thought nothing of it, "Oh, you have a car seat, great!"
Be thankful your Aunt was able to do this for you, that AJ had fun. Next time you know to cover the car seat situation thoroughly.

yeah that's the gist of it I think. I was annoyed she just totally ignored my speech about rear facing vs forward facing. I think though she sees my point, sort of. Its not a safety issue for her but a don't get AJ Sick thing.
I want to make it clear though.. she HAD a carseat. She didn't use it. She went in my other aunt's car. My aunt has 3 cars.. two trucks and her buick. I vetoed the buick but I put it one of the trucks. I did NOT leave AJ without a mod of transport!
