Verizon to Verizon cell phone calls. Does anyone else have friends who......
will only speak by cell phone b/c you both have Verizon? Even if you both have a landline? I live in an area where I do not have good cell phone reception. I've asked my friends to try to reach me at work or home during hours that I am likely to be at one of those places (and those times are easy to predict). I work for myself, so there is no reason not to call the office line.
I have 2 friends who tell me that they want to take advantage of free Verizon to Verizon calls. They have no interest in speaking on the phone otherwise. If I don't even know that my phone has rung, what are they really taking advantage of? If I can't hear anything they are saying, why bother? It's at the point where I barely get to speak to certain people because any contact they initiate is on a weeknight on my cell, when I am home and even if the call comes through, it will only last about 3 seconds. Yesterday, I told a friend that it's not like we go out to fancy dinners all the time and it's not like our friendship is so costly that she has to cut corners. She said she does not want to use her minutes. Well, she must have SOME minutes in her plan. What if I did not have Verizon? Would she just not call? I don't think this is an excuse to blow me off, as both friends try to reach me on my cell constantly.
I have already complained to Verizon about the lack of service. It's because people in the neighborhood have protested new cell towers. I looked into other providers and the reports do not show better service from them, and those that have good service at my home have bad service in other areas, areas where I can't rely on a landline. Verizon is one issue, but I am at the point where it's not worth making a change just to accommodate my cheap friends (and a change is no good in their eyed b/c then I won't have a precious Verizon cell phone).
I'm pregnant and it will be difficult enough to keep up with my friends at the beginning, but if they refuse to speak when I am on my landline, there won't be much left of the friendship.
Okay, I am thinking of this as I write it and I am amazed at how cheap some people are being. These are people who live on Long Island and in the city (in case anyone is wondering how long distance it is).
Am I the only person who finds it annoying that these 2 friends want to speak to me only if we are both on cell phones?

I have a friend who "prefers" if I call her on her cell and vice versa. But if I call her landline then she will talk to me.
The funny part of it is, you already pay for the landline anyway so it's not costing anymore to call on the landline.

But if one of us is on cell, then it costs minutes for that person. I understand that but that leads to a whole different issue, b/c one of these people refuses to believe that I hear background noise such as the wind blowing, the sirens and the taxi horns when she calls me from the street during lunch hour. She seems annoyed if I have to ask her to repeat herself when she is calling from the street.

No, what I mean is - if the person calls you from a landline, it's not costing her any more or less cuz all calls are included in your phone bill.
Either way, your "friends" are being a tad ridiculous and if they are going to give up a friendship over cellphones and/or landlines, they probably weren't true friends to start with.

Wow, some people have such interesting hang ups!
Although most of my friends have Verizon as do I, if call from a landline or vice versa it's never a big deal.
And if they are so concerned with using minutes why don't they just call your landline during nights and weekends then?
Your friends certainly shouldn't be putting you in that situation in the first place.
And aren't they getting aggravated when the call gets dropped or you can't hear them and ask them to repeat themselves fifty times?
You should turn your cell phone off and change your message to:
"Sorry I can't answer the phone right now. Chances are I am in a dead spot and don't even know the phone rang. Please call my landline as I am sure I'm available to speak to you"
And see who of your friends winds up calling your office/home.

Re: Verizon to Verizon cell phone calls. Does anyone else have friends who......
The only pet peeve I have is when someone calls me from their landline to my cell phone and then we talk for a while. I've been charged over $100 because of using minutes that were not included. That's not cheap for me!
I love these people and want to talk to them, but that's a lot of money on one call. I've asked them to try to call me via their cell phone and there's been no issue.
Sometimes I'll call from my cell to their landline, and then it's on me to regulate the amount of minutes. But, it's the unexpected 30 mins. that puts me over from time to time!
Maybe you can just suggest to your friends that they can call you landline=landline for "conversations" --- or better yet, say, "oh, let me call you back on my landline" and then call them on a non-cell phone!

I haven't kept track of all the rules and I forgot about the free nights and weekends. Funny thing is, that is when I speak to these people, unless they are on lunch hour. They don't speak from work, which I have respected and understood even though I have never had a job where I could not speak from work.
I may try your idea for the outgoing greeting.
Leese, how many minutes are in your plan? Maybe I'm not aware of how much minutes cost or how easy it is to go over. I always had a very big plan. I reduced my # of minutes several months after I realized that I am often not in a location where I can use my cell phone. I am still way under the # of minutes in the plan.

Re: Verizon to Verizon cell phone calls. Does anyone else have friends who......
People are petty...even our "friends." I never use my houseline, even though ALL calls on it are free simply b/c I don't know anyone's numbers and have to use my cell to look them up anyway. BUT if someone specifically asked me to call their houseline, I would, even from my precious cell. I do have Verizon and while most of my calls are Verizon-to-Verizon, I have looooong calls with my mom that are not. The calls come out of MY minutes, but not hers b/c she has Alltel and I'm in her "5." She doesn't have a landline, so I really don't sweat it too much. Combined, DH and I barely touch our "minutes" each month anyway.
Sorry they are being nuts.

it seems that you've made it very clear about your cell phone reception, or lack thereof.
i would leave that outgoing message and see who really is a friend.

I can understand trying to optimize the free minutes but they are really taking it a step or two too far.

I have unlimited minutes for nights and weekends and for verizon to verizon phones.
I have about 300 mins. I think of all other types.
Between various "non-verizon" calls I get during the day, I utilize a lot of my minutes a month.
If they are anything like me, they have burned. They didn't realize that they had gone over, had a long healthy conversation and then bam! get hit.
I had about a twenty min. conversation over my minutes that resulted in an extra $50.00. And, it shows you which call was the "culprit" -- I mentioned to my mom that she was my "over minutes" and she sent me a check because she felt bad.
I'm not saying that they are being fair or anything, but there is another side. I'm not ashamed to say that I try to find alternate ways, whether talking after a certain period of time or trying to do everything on cell when I can.
HTH!

absolutely - If I'm out, I will call DH's cell, b/c it's verizon, but I don't consider it make it or break it. If I can't get someone on the cell phone - I will usually leave a message saying that I'm trying their home phone.
I can definitely see how it can be frustrating for you.
