I think this line sums it up well:
A home is primarily a place to live. Its value as an investment is secondary and certainly is no replacement for a well-diversified portfolio of stocks and bonds.

Too many people in the past few years thought buying a house would be like a free ATM machine - and thats what led to a lot of the problems that are happening today.

The article has some good points however, it's hard to place a value on the security of knowing that you own your own home. Now, you have to keep in mind that you dont own it until your mortgage is paid off - but I imagine when you get to that day the feeling is something that is hard to beat!

I agree.
My mom didn't buy a house until she was in her late 30s when she was financially able to- and b/c she waited and got something she could afford- in 12 years she paid the entire thing off.. never re-financed, never took out equity- bought it and paid it off..
she and my step father make a modest salary combined- but by living w/i their means, they were able to do it- i think that is key.
