Very random daycare question

Jack isn't in a daycare but I was wondering how do they nap the kids?

Do they do it all at the same time?
Do they follow your childs routine?
Do they all sleep in the same room? I don't think I could see Jack falling asleep with other kids around.

This is just something I am curious about as I wait for Jack to wake up from his nap! Chat Icon

ETA: what age do they stop giving kids naps?

ETA Again: If one doesn't fall asleep do they take them out of the crib - or leave them in for downtime!

I need a life I know!

Re: Very random daycare question

My daycare tries to follow our schedule but Ryan naps like crap there. They have pack n plays set up but they often take them outside in the strollers and that's where he gets most of his naps.

My sister is almost 4 and still naps at daycare b/c she needs her nap - not sure if other places are more structured and try to have them all nap at once, or what.

Re: Very random daycare question

Up until she was a year old, they just followed her schedule. At a year old, she moved to an older class, with cots, and at that time, the teacher put them on a schedule. You should have seen the look on my face when I walked in for the first time and saw half a dozen little one year olds ALL asleep at the same time on cots - and let me tell you, my daughter was NEVER a good napper at home! But at school they wear them out SO much, and they put them on such a routine, that they all know what to expect and konk out around the same time.

Now, at 3, there are days Alex won't nap at school because she's starting to give up her naps. For the kids that are transitioning out of naps, if the teacher sees that they aren't going to nap, the assistant takes them out of the room and does something else with them.

They have a certain time, after lunch, my daycare was from 12:30-3pm that they have "quiet time".

Do they do it all at the same time?
Yes

Do they follow your childs routine?
No, the kids usually get into the routine of the class.

Do they all sleep in the same room?
Yes, cribs when they are younger, cots as they get older.

ETA: what age do they stop giving kids naps?
My kids had "quiet time" until 4-5. You don't have to sleep but you need to be quiet for the other kids who do want to sleep.

ETA Again: If one doesn't fall asleep do they take them out of the crib - or leave them in for downtime!
Not sure if they take them out of their crib as usually the infants are put down when they get tired, not at certain times.

Re: Very random daycare question

I swear it is like Baby Mob mentality. I have been there when it is naptime and there are 8-10 babies in the nursery and they are all napping. The younger babies nap at the own times when they need to. Once the baby is older I guess around 6 months or so they put them on a napping schedule. DS sleeps from 8:30 to 9:30 or 10 and then 12:30 to 2:30. We have adapted his schedule at home to this one. They need to keep all the babies on one schedule (except the small ones) or there would be no way for them to do it. They turn off the lights in the nursery and play music and they all go to sleep. If a baby doesn't sleep and fusses they will take them out of the nursery and hold them or play with them while the others nap so that they do not wake the other babies. At a year old they cut out his morning nap so he will have one long afternoon nap. At my daycare they keep the afternoon nap the entire way through. My nephew is in the 5 year old class and he still naps. In the nursery they nap in cribs at a year and older then nap on cots and mats

Re: Very random daycare question

When they are infant and up to 1 year, DS' class was somehow following each child schedule. Feeding and naps. They each had their own crib.

After 1 year they were moved to the younger toddler room and they had cots, no cribs. They followed a more strick schedule for the "whole" class not just individually. The older they get the more structured it is.

Re: Very random daycare question

Not only did Cailen's daycare do it at the same time, on cots, with the kids all together, but his current daycare naps them at the same time so nothing changed routine-wise for him!!!

Cailen will ONLY nap at daycare, and not with us! I thought for sure he would never nap on the cot when he moved up, but he did it from day 1!

There's something about making the room dark, the sleepy music, and seeing all the kids doing it that sends him into nap mode

On the weekends he can go the whole day without a nap!!!!!!

Re: Very random daycare question

Thanks for all of your replies - one more question - do they keep the cribs and the cots in the same room that they play in all day - or do they go to a seperate room?

Again, why I am asking these questions - I have no idea Chat Icon Chat Icon

I just imagine Jack screaming on the top of his lungs and keeping every other poor kid up!

Re: Very random daycare question

At Alex's school, for the infant room, there are two separate rooms - the play area, and the sleep area with all the cribs, relaxing music, twinkle lights, etc. When they get older though, and all nap at the same time, they just run over to the pile of cots, grab one, put on the floor and all nap together in the room.

Our daycare had a separate area for cribs in the infant room.

But the toddler room the cots are laid out where they play.

There are some days when some kids won't sleep, but they know they have to play quietly to not wake the others.

It's amazing what peer pressure can do even at 18 months.

At the center I worked for, all the kids napped together.
My room, the cribs/cots were on one side and they played on the other.
It took a while (maybe a week or so) in the beginning of the school year to get the kids on the same routine.
They picked it up quickly.
In the older rooms, they can sit on their cots for 30 mins or so. If they didn't fall asleep, they can get up and do a quiet activity.

Re: Very random daycare question

The baby rooms were bigger and had the cribs and play area all in the same room. The kids would nap no problem, if with the lights on and other kids playing. In the toddler room, the cots stack and get stored in a little cubby are in the wall of the room. They take the cots out and set them up whil the kids are eating lunch. As soon as the kids are done, they get up from the table and go lay on their cot--I never thought this was possible till I saw it with my own eyes! As the kids wake up, they play quietly and out away their cot. Sometimes they take the awake ones out on the buggy to keep the room quieter.

Re: Very random daycare question

Jacob's daycare has there own schedule. The kids all nap at the same time and if a child doesnt nap they would take them out of the crib and give them something quiet to do at the table while the others slept. When Jacob first started daycare at almost 4 months, they explained the children's schedule to me. I couldnt believe that all the kids napped at the same time but the the teachers told me that they do. They were right...it seems that if one does something, the others follow (with naps and everything else Chat Icon ) Anyway, the whole daycare follows the same nap schedule. Jacob's daycare goes up to 4 years old and they still have naptime in that class.

Re: Very random daycare question

At Bella's school they all nap on a schedule...right now it is between 1 and 3 pm. She is 3 years old. Sometimes she will sleep for 2 full hours, sometimes not at all...They make a few attempts and if she is really unwilling they do a quiet activity like coloring...the lights are kept low and music is on as well as using their whispering voice...

Bella still naps at home as well for one hour usually, sometimes two! She can go without a nap at this point if we have a busy day, but she goes down easily in her bed and stays there...she calls us when she is up and says "Mommy, I am awake"

Do they do it all at the same time?
Yes...all the munchkind go down in their cots at the same time and the kids that require extra help settling down (ahem...Lucas) get a little extra attention (somehow my son managed to get a teacher to rub his forehead or back every day!)

Do they follow your childs routine?
Yes and no....routine as far as times...no....routine as far as methods...kind of - Lucas needs a lovey and they allow him to have it.

As far as schedule...we adjust our home routine to match daycare...as best as we can. For example...daycare naps him at 12 pm after lunch. We nap him anywhere from 10 - 11 am on the weekends. Close but not exact. Oh and FYI...he sleeps longer at home which has to be because of the timing.

Do they all sleep in the same room?
Yes

What age do they stop giving kids naps? Not sure but I would think sometime around 2 or 3 years old. 18 months definitely still nap and Lucas will be in the room for a bit so I can say about 2 without too much doubt.

If one doesn't fall asleep do they take them out of the crib - or leave them in for downtime!
For the infants they try to leave them down so long as they are quiet to teach them that it's down time. If they cry they come out.

And for any age if they don't sleep and they won't lay down in the crib then they have quiet play at the table.
