Very random question about salting brick steps
....we recently redid our steps/walkway to all brick. (summer time) We salt the driveway and about 5 times this winter the brick steps. DH just called and told me not to salt the brick steps b/c he thinks it's bad for the brick. Anyone know if this is true? Hopefully we haven't ruined our new bricks....a good powerwashing should handle it come Spring. Hmmm....

Re: Very random question about salting brick steps
Your DH is right - don't use rock salt or salt on brick. It can cause long-term damage. I doubt the few times you've salted it will cause you any problems, though.
My parents use sand on their brick steps and walk.

Re: Very random question about salting brick steps
Thanks! I have sand...we'll use that from now on. :) I'm sure they're fine, too. Just good to know going forward.

Re: Very random question about salting brick steps
I knew about this - so when I buy salt, I find one that is safe for concrete (since that's the type of driveway we have) and brick. It tends to be more expensive, but it works.
Then in the spring, we take sand and sweep it over the brick front walkway to fill in any gaps that occurred over the winter.

thanks for the advice!!!! i hope we haven't already ruined 'em. Literally been at least 5 times, with each snowfall...

This is great for preventing weeds from growing in between the bricks in the walkway, too!
