Very sad question - what should I do?
Stormy, my cat, is progressively getting thinner and thinner. He has 2 tumors and the dr. said that as long as he is still eating, we don't have to put him to sleep.
He is 12 - I've had him since he was a kitten.
Heres the thing though - he is eating very little, and we think it may be hurting him to swallow. He makes gulping noises like he's forcing the food down. Its so sad because he LOVES to eat (in his prime he was 20 lbs) but now he is at the most 11 pounds, and I think he may even be less than that. even his treats are hard to eat. He is always by his bowl waiting for his food, but when he gets it he takes a few bites....
All day, he lies on the cool floor - I know its hot, but he used to lie on his back and air out his fat tummy. Now its like he will plunk down wherever he is.
He looks so frail and uncomfortable. Walking up the steps, he sort of limps - he used to run up the steps, now he takes a few steps at a time (sort of the way a little kid walks up steps.)
I don't want to ask this question, but I know you ladies will be truthful with me...
Is it time to put him down?

Liza I am so sorry about your kitty. Honestly, in my experience (personal experience included) if you are asking then maybe it is time.
It is the hardest decision I ever had to make.

Can the vet give you a better idea as to whether he is suffering?

Re: Very sad question - what should I do?
It sounds like it is time.....sorry...
In the meantime, can you give him canned food and add water to make it very soft and easy to swallow?

Maybe we'll try this...
I have been in such denial abut this - I keep thinking he's going to get better

Re: Very sad question - what should I do?
I'm so sorry. If his quality of life is diminished and you think he is suffering it would be the kindest thing you could do for him. It's going to be really hard and I really feel for you

Re: Very sad question - what should I do?
Have you taken him to the vet, Liza? Maybe it is something that can be cured? If he is truly suffering though, it is best to relieve him of his misery. I am sorry you have to make this decision

Yes, he was at the vet - she was the one who has been telling us that as long as he is eating, he is happy, but once he stops eating, then his quality of life is really going to be poor....
