Truly looking for feedback here. A good friend of mine has had a cat for about 2 years now. The cat is sweet to her BUT ONLY her. When anyone comes over she swats at them, scratches them , hisses, etc. It's so bad that most people don't want to go to her apt. ever. She has tried prozac for the cat and has asked for help at her vets office. She feels at this point she doesn't know what to do and feels like she can't live like this. SHe doesn't know where to take this cat because nobody will want it and they will put her to sleep. Please give me your advice for her. Is there anyone that can help? She's miserable about it.Chat Icon

I am a cat owner and if it were my cat, I'd put her in a room with her litter, food and water while I had guests over. I don't think this is a dire situation that warrants re-homing or a shelter, but I'm not the one living with this cat. Maybe she should try another vet or look online for resources, you'd be surprised at what natural remedies are out there to combat pet ailments. It might be something unusual that the vet isn't picking up. Best of luck to her.

I had a cat like this. I kept her in my bedroom when people came over. I loved her and she loved me. Why doesn't she just put the cat in another room?

Could the cat be lonely? Does your friend leave the cat home alone often?

I hate to say this, but it could be the cats personality. My sister has a cat like this. Very very unfriendly even though my sister took care of her from the moment she was born. Just like people, some cats/dogs/hamsters, etc are not very friendlyChat Icon

Thank you! She lives in a very small 1 bedroom apartment. When she has tried this the cat scratches at the door, cries, etc.

My parents have a cat who is the devil incarnate. She whines something fierce, tries to stop you from walking away, hell, she even bangs her head on the door if they put her in a room while people are over. It's annoying, but what are ya gonna do? She's a wackadoo cat and we deal with her challenging personality LOL

We had a cat like this too. Loved me. Wasn't a fan of others. Many cats are like this.

Tell your friend to watch Cat from Hell. if she has optimum she can see back episodes Free on Demand. One of the suggestions was that there should be a treat jar and cat tree at the front door and when guests come in everyone gives the cat a treat. This helps the cat associate strangers with something positive. A lot of exercise to burn negative energy helps too. The show suggests 15 minutes of play, which should leave the cat panting.

I have a hissy cat. She draws blood every time we go to the vet. No one can pick her up...except me. she loves me. Not a fan of DH or anyone else. Not even my other cat. I'm her person and I'm honored. When people come over, I tell them to stay away from the cat unless they want to get scratched. If I am having a lot of people over, I put her in the bedroom.

This

We put my cat in another room when we have people over.

He can swat at people when he doesn't want to be bothered, it's his nature.

I'm not going to give him away because of that. Especially, if I can prevent the situation by doing the above.

I agree- I had a cat like this too- it was even nasty to me at times. But it was my cat, and I loved it regardless.
It usually didn't come around company anyway- it hid- but if it was aggressvie to my guests I would have done what is suggested above.

Cat owner here. And this would be my plan. I don't know why you'd rehome a cat you love and who loves you. But like PP said, I dont know all the facts. Just keep the kitty away.

I had a cat who'd hiss we kept him separate and basically didn't crowd him. He came around after a long while, but wouldnt want to be held, touched, spoken to or god help you pet him. Otherwise we went out to meet friends instead.
