Virgin Mobile phones

How does their basic plan work? I buy a phone and how much is it a month to keep it activated?

Re: Virgin Mobile phones

I have one, and have had it for almost 3 years. The way it works is you buy the phone and have to add money to your account. You can either register a credit card with them and add periodically using the card, or you can purchase these "top up" cards at places that sell the phones and some other stores (I know Target carries them.) The smallest amount you can add is $20. Then in order to keep the phone active and keep your phone number, you must add at least $20 every 3 months, whether you use the previous month's $$ or not. On average, I probably only use the $20 every 3 months, but sometimes more if I am travelling or something. You pay for call per minute. I think it is something like $0.25 per minute for the first 5 minutes and then $0.10 per minute after that. The service seems good to me (I think they are owned by Sprint) - I haven't noticed any more dropped calls or interference than anyone else I know with a cell phone.

It is a great plan for me, because when I had a monthly plan, I really didn't use the phone that much. I don't really like talking on cell phones, but like having it in the car with me, when I am traveling, and for emergencies.

You have to get a new number right -- you can't keep your old one? I am thinking of switching too because I never even come close to my minutes!

That I am not sure about - I had cancelled my old phone a long time before getting the Virgin phone.
Here's the website:

Virgin Mobile

ETA: the site says $0.25 per minute for the first 10 minutes of that day, then $0.10 per minute after that if you are using the first plan they describe Chat Icon

Thanks! Can I order the phone/service at Target?

Re: Virgin Mobile phones

We got our phones at Target, and they still sell them there, along with accessories, like the car charger, and the top up cards.
