Virginia Tech spinoff: how do you feel about your kids going away to school?
So with the recent tragedy at Virginia Tech it has made me wonder about how any parent with a child away at school must feel. I am an adult ESL teacher and talked to my students about this today and many of them said that because of this incident they wouldn't feel safe with their children living away at school. If they choose to go to college, they want them to commute. I tried to tell them it could happen anywhere and what is the option? Online degrees?
How do you feel?

I feel that kids have been living away at schools for many years and there has never been a problem until now.
I think security at colleges will be increased after this and I think everything will be fine.

I was also thinking about this, as such incidents sometimes have "copycats." College life and dorm life are such wonderful experiences that it is a shame that we have to think about this. Campus safety has always been an issue but a massacre was beyond what most people ever feared.

Since most of this happened in classrooms, and much like the college I attended VT has a large commuter population, I think this unfortunately could happen at any school. It's a shame, and it is very scary, but I don't know that being a commuter would help the situation.
I guess online degrees are one solution, but what's to stop an unbalanced person from doing this in a mall, grocery store, crowded park, etc. Unfortunately, I think that unless you become a hermit and never leave your house it would be impossible to avoid this hazard completely.

I agree with this. We cannot guarantee that this won't happen anywhere. I would never force my kids to stay home because of my own paranoia. Where would it end? They can't work at a bank because there may be a holdup? A store may be robbed? We live in a dangerous world, but I don't think the solution is to penalize future generations.
And I work at a university, and I don't even know that increased security is the solution. The gunman was a student, so he had ID...Should there be metal detectors at every building entrance? If someone wants to commit a crime, he will find a way to do it. If there were detectors at every building he could stand outside a building and shoot people, or stand across the street from campus and shoot people. It's like after Sept. 11 or the D.C. sniper killings...No one felt comfortable flying, driving, or even working in the city. We cannot let any of these acts scare us into not living our lives.

I was going to say something similar to CathyB. Unfortunately something like this could and have happened in all types of places -- schools, places of businesses, LIRR, etc. The only sure way to prevent this from happening to you is to avoid any and all public places.

I would still want my children to experience going away if that is what they choose to do-it is something I will push for- this is a horrible and unfortunate event however, it can happen whether the students were commuters at VTech or if they lived there-it can happen at any school, any place, any day...

As much as we want we can't put our children in a glass box. I want my daughter to live on campus somewhere, even if it's close to home. I feel that I really missed out by commuting to college. Of course if she doesn't want to I won't force her but I will encourage it as an option for her. The odds are small. Of course it could happen but I'm learning more and more each day I can't live my life worrying about what if's. I feel awful for those parents and can't imagine their grief and pray that I never have to see the day that I outlive my children.

As horrible as it is, it could happen anywhere including a commuter campus.
