Visiting and Staying with Friends Out of State
Columbus Day weekend we will be traveling to Indiana to visit and stay with DH's friends. What is the proper etiquitte when it comes to staying at someone's home? If I were to go to my friend's house next door for dinner, I would bring a bottle of wine, but this is different. Plus the fact that we are going to not check any luggage so anything I would bring would have to be carry on. Anyone have suggestions? I was thinking of taking them out for dinner one night but they mentioned that another relative or two might be visiting that weekend too (they have a very big house apparently so they is plenty of room) so I dont know if that would work either. TIA

I would bring a bottle of wine or whatever they drink, and offer to take them out to dinner. Also, while there, I'd offer to help w/ any chores they need doing (even just loading the dishwasher, prepping dinner) or cook them a nice dinner. Or maybe a nice breakfast in the morning, if you won't be stepping on anyone's toes?

Re: Visiting and Staying with Friends Out of State
We've had plenty of friends stay with us from OOS and I fully appreciate them taking us out to dinner or picking up the tab on delivery. Or just bringing a bottle of wine or 12 pack of beer, since we go through a bit when friends are here.
Or maybe have a gift basket of fruit, wine or goodies arrive while you are there? That way you don't have to bring anything on the plane or stop at a liquor store to pick anything up.

I think you can when you check your bags but if you don't want to do that you can wait until you get there and pick it up. Also going out to dinner is something DH and I appreciate every time we have visitors.

I think a nice gesture would be to take them out to dinner maybe on your last night or something.

What about bringing something NY with you like - a dozen bagels or something like that? You can carry that on. Or you could always pick something up while you are there.

Re: Visiting and Staying with Friends Out of State
When I travel and stay with friends I usually take them out to dinner, purchase some sort of alcohol (wine, beer) for them when I get there, buy some groceries while I'm there, or buy a gift for their children.

you can't bring the wine on the plane, but you can pack it up in your luggage.
Instead of dinner, you could offer to take everyone out to breakfast?
