Vitamins: OTC vs Rx
what do you take? is there really a HUGE difference? Right now im taking One-A-Day prenatal with DHA. I figure the OB will give me an Rx for a vitamin at my appt but does it really matter? Im very sensitive to multivitamins (make me sick). Im doing good on the OTC so why change if I dont really NEED to? Any thoughts?

Re: Vitamins: OTC vs Rx
I am INSANE sensitive to Vitamins too - i have ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS gotten naseaus from vitamins.
When we started TTC'ing, a close friend of mine and a nurse told me that she STILL to this day, (she had two boys 12 years ago), takes Target prenatals (she has similar stomach issues to me). She got me a bottle and i take them at night, with food and i haven't been naseauted once!!!!
In addition, i do take a DHA supplement and extra Folic Acid, but that's it!

I've been taking the OTC. My midwife said there is no real difference.

Re: Vitamins: OTC vs Rx
Yes there is a difference - but whether you take them or not is really dependent on your OB and your comfort level.
The OTC ones have less folic acid and some of the other vitamins. The Rx have at least 1mg of folic acid and often other things like DHA etc (you can get DHA over the counter but have to buy two different things).
They DO make Rx's generic - in fact Duet prenatal with DHA now makes a generic one - I suggest if you want an Rx that you maybe ask your pharmacist which ones come in generic so you don't have to spend an arm and a leg. I was spending $50 a month which was ridiculous -but after talking to several OBs I didn't want to go with OTC when they all strongly recommended against it unless I took an extra folic acid supplement. But now I pay $10 and I don't have to worry about it.

Re: Vitamins: OTC vs Rx
My OB said that the reason to take Rx over OTC are that you aren't quite sure of the metal content in OTC. Rx have a safe level of metals in them. I don't know if I agree, that's just what he told me....

My OB said there is absolutely no difference at all. I took OTC and a fish oil supplement per her recommendation.
