Volunteer Work
Does anyone do volunteer work on a regular basis? I'd like to get involved in some sort of a women's issue group but I'm not really sure where to start. When I googled it, Planned Parenthood was one of the only things that came up and to be honest, I think my volunteering there would send both my mother and grandmother to an early grave.
Anyone have any other ideas/info?

how about a senior living center, there are plenty on Queens Blvd and they could use some love.

Re: Volunteer Work
I know this might sound bad but I'm not all about old people, they make me nervous. DH's grandparents live in an Assisted Living and that's about the best I can tolerate. MIL works in a nursing home and I can barely go visit her at work. Same with sick kids, I think I just get too upset.
I was really thinking along the lines of domestic violence - a shelter or hotline or something.

Re: Volunteer Work
I'm on the committee at Schneiders to assist with the Babies Memorial Garden. I actually would really like to do some more volunteer work there soon when my schedule gets a bit more flexible

Re: Volunteer Work
Yeah, I have a hard time in nursing homes too.
In the Bronx there are lots of CBOs (Community Based Organizations) that have a wide range of purposes, though they tend to be focused on family related things. I am sure organizations like this exist throughout the city.

Re: Volunteer Work
I have the same problem, Eileen. I want to volunteer, but I can't think of a single place that would be overwhelmingly depressing. I'd burn out on the first day.
