Waiting to buy nursery furniture until AFTER...

the baby is born.

my sister thinks I am crazy, but I am not finding out what I am having, and if it's a girl, I'd like white furniture with a shabby chic look - a boy, dark wood...

so I know the baby is in a bassinet for a month or so...and I know that Pottery Barn delivers its furniture fully put together and in a week...

SO the question is, am I crazy to wait until after I have the baby to order its furniture???

(PS the room will be painted, carpet will be new...just awaiting furniture)

TIA!

You arent crazy. People do it all the time. You should have what you want. Keep in mind the time frame it will take for all of the furniture to arrive. PLENTY of babies in all sorts of living/family situations live in bassinettes and Pack and Plays for a few months anyway. I Assure you that your child will not know the difference.

I think if you are using a bassinette then you should be fine. Just be aware that sometimes things are discontinued or unavailable when you want them & may have to wait. I would order it as soon as the baby is born if you can.Chat Icon

Re: Waiting to buy nursery furniture until AFTER...

we're in the same boat, not so much about not knowing the sex but because we're thinking about moving and I don't know if I should lose my office now for a small nursery when I could move into a bigger house with bigger rooms in the near future

Re: Waiting to buy nursery furniture until AFTER...

We just talked about this last night...we are going to wait as well...main reason is because we are hoping to be moving into a house, and we dont want to get the furniture until we do that...and second, if this one is a girl, I am pretty sure that I want white furniture, and if its a boy, I want the light wood color.

But I am going to look around before the baby comes, because remember, it can take awhile for some furniture to come in....they said that my sons would take 12 weeks.

They do?? That is a huge plus for me and DH. We aren't the handiest people and I was nervous about assembling the crib correctly. There is one crib that I loooooove from PB.

Is this all their furniture or just the cribs? I was thinking about ordering from there and it seemed to me only the crib came with home assembly but i could be wrong. That is a turn off to me if they don't assemble all the furniture.

I guess I could call them but do you know?

I am waiting also. We have a 1br apt right now. I am due in Dec & our lease is up in March. I am hoping to move out of here & rent a house in April. (buying is not an option right now) The furniture willbe purchased after we move.

I checked on the Pottery Barn website, and this is what it said: (looks like majority of cribs have this service)

IN-HOME DELIVERY Items showing this symbol (H) are delivered by our In-Home Delivery service. With In-Home Delivery, the item is brought into your home, unpacked and assembled (except for select cribs and changing tables, which require owner assembly), and packaging is removed. Delivery is by appointment, Monday - Saturday; our delivery service will call to arrange a day. Available in the contiguous 48 states. For your convenience, we're proud to introduce a new two-hour appointment window on in-home deliveries in major metropolitan areas only (We're sorry, but only items marked with this symbol may be sent via In-Home Delivery.) Due to the special care involved, items shipped with our In-Home Delivery service may take longer than other items to arrive.

I would visit the PBKids in Roosevelt Field if you can. My brother was the manager there up until a year ago, and they are so customer-service oriented.

I didn't find out the sex with my first and picked out furnture. I would have liked to have it gender specific. For the next one I plan on waiting. The baby will be in out room for the first few months anyway. We do not want to find out the sex for the next baby either. I will wait to order the furniture.
