Waking baby for a feeding?
My DS is 2 1/2 weeks old and I am BF. My pediatrician told me I should never let him sleep for more than 4 hours without a feeding. Most times he wakes up himself, but other times he is still sleeping so I will wake him. My mom says I slept through the night from the very beginning and she never woke me up so I was just wondering, did you wake your baby to eat? At what age can you let them sleep as long as they want?

Re: Waking baby for a feeding?
My daughter is 5 weeks old - and ill never wake her for a feeding. There are days when she will sleep more and days when she sleeps less as well as eats more and then the opposite.
Trust me - they will let you know when they are hungry. Let him sleep - and use that time to rest and get whatever you need done.....

Re: Waking baby for a feeding?
While I was BFing- my DR told me to wake DS after 4 hrs to eat as well...- but Im pretty sure that only applied to the day time...
Did your DS lose some weight- does the ped. think he's not getting enough??
If not... then at night Id let him sleep... and wake after 4hrs to BF during the day...

Re: Waking baby for a feeding?
I'd really love to let him sleep. I think he's definitely getting enough to eat. In one week he gained 9 ounces. Hes almost 10 pounds already!

Re: Waking baby for a feeding?
Hmmm... then Id let him sleep...
The say on avg a newborn should gain an oz. a day...
Since he clearly is doing that... I would let him sleep at night... HOWEVER during the day I would stick to waking him after 4 hrs...
At this stage, everyday is different...I know for my DS there were days where I had to wake him for his feedings, because all he wanted to do was sleep...
And there were other days he wanted to eat every hour....
(I guess making up for the other days)
Try and relax, and enjoy your sleep while you can!

Re: Waking baby for a feeding?
for the first couple weeks we woke her every 3 hours to eat all day and night because she was jaundice and needed to eat. After that the ped said she could go one 5-6 hour stretch at night (which she never did).
I think after 3 weeks we stopped waking her.

Re: Waking baby for a feeding?
My LC called today to see how things were going and I asked her and she said I should only let him go 2-3 hours during the day and 4 to 4.5 hours at night to make sure he keeps gaining weight. He did have jaundice and had to have phototherapy so that's another reason my ped and LC want me to feed him so much. I guess I'll keep waking him for now.
