Wall paper
I have a couple of questions. First, does anyone know how much it would cost to take down wall paper and put up new wall paper in a moderately sized kitchen? It's not large, but it's not small, and there isnt much wall space because of cabinets and backsplash....
Second, where on LI do they sell wall paper now-a-days. I have always been a fan of just painting walls but recently I have wanted to experiment with wall paper.

Re: Wall paper
I've removed walpaper in 3 rooms - it's fairly easy just messy and mundane - so I can't help you on pricing.
The Aboff's by me sells wallpaper...

As for taking it down it depends on how old it is & how it was applied. The worst case scenario (IMO) is if it is really old used with the old glue then you may have to rent a steamer & use that to scrape off the old. It is not hard, just tedious.

Re: Wall paper
yea, Aboff's sells wallpaper as too Home Depot & Lowes.
As for removing it, it is totally a DIY. It can be annoying, but its not worth it to pay somebody. We used this stuff called Zap I believe. You spray it on and the paper because easier to pull off. Also, in a kitchen I've found (based on helping my folks) that the paper tends to peel easier because of the steam, grease, etc that is in there, unlike a bedroom lets says.

Re: Wall paper
If I have to have them come to put up new wall paper or paint anyways, I kinda want them to take down the old stuff too! I am being lazy! I can just picture what it will look like if i try to do this myself!
The wall paper was hung about 12 years ago.....

Re: Wall paper
We just wallpapered our kitchen (well, DH did). Actually, we REwallpapered it!!! We had wallpapered last year and our ceiling had to be lowered for construction and that ruined what we put up last year
Anyway, DH removed the old wallpaper using DIF. You can get a "tiger" which tears small holes in the wallpaper and it's easier to soak the paper with DIF, but, be careful, sometimes the tiger marks the wall underneath and you'll have to spackle.
Our wallpaper cost $150 for 4 double rolls. Hanging it was free, compliments of DH I have heard of prices from $25 to $50 a roll to hang it.
We got our wallpaper at East Islip Paints, but most paint stores will have sample books which you can take home and they then order what you decide on.

Re: Wall paper
I've done alot of wallpapering in my time and it is, definitely, a do-it-yourself project. It's, really, not that hard. Once you get the old paper down, make sure you prime the wall before papering again. If you are going to have someone do it for you, they, usually, charge what you paid for the paper. If you paid $30.00 per roll, they will charge $30.00 for labor. It all varies with the person doing the job. I assume if they have to take the other paper down, it will cost more. If you pick a simple pattern, it's very easy to do yourself. You can get wallpaper at reasonable prices in Lowe's and Home Depot.
