Wanna Help Me Pick a Vacation?

It's for my in-laws. They are celebrating their 60th anniversary and DH and his brother want to send them on a trip somewhere.

Keep in mind that they are not that mobile and I wouldn't trust them to drive themselves in a foreign (new) place.

SO we are thinking about cruises or a long weekend in Sonoma but this is a lot harder than I thought it would be.

Any ideas? I could sure use some help.

Re: Wanna Help Me Pick a Vacation?

They are in Seattle, but that was my first choice.. it's an easy cruise and not so island hoppy.

They could fly into NY stay a few days with us and then we could take them to the pier and see them off.

DH is on the fence..

Any other ideas?

Cruise all the way! It is so good for people who have a hard time getting around.
Since they live in seattle, what about an Alaska cruise. They have a port right in Seattle. That is a great cruise for that age group!

Go for Royal Carribeean Brillance of the Seas for Alaska. I saw it on the travel channel. It looks really nice!

Re: Wanna Help Me Pick a Vacation?

Definately a cruise especially if they are not too mobile! They can do as much or as little as they want to. The cruise to Bermuda is a nice idea or what about a West Coast cruise like Alaska or Hawaii???

Re: Wanna Help Me Pick a Vacation?

Older folks LOVE cruises. All the food, dressing up, the shows in the evening. Most of the time the older folks don't even leave the ship when they go into a port! I definitely think it's the way to go. AND, I definitely think Princess or Royal Caribbean, too.

ditto that... however it depends on when you want to send them. Alaska Crusies only run Mid May-Mid September. We went earlier this year the first week of June and it was still quite chilly.

if they are not that mobile, I wouldn't send them to Napa. you do a lot of walking through the vineyards and on the tours. and unless they're big wine drinkers, I don't think they would enjoy it.

a cruise is definitely a much better idea!

Re: Wanna Help Me Pick a Vacation?

The cruise to Bermuda is a good option. Bermuda is a laid back place and attracts a more mature group as well I think, compared to say Jamaica..

With all the excursions on the Alaska cruises our fear is that it's pretty rough terrain and cold and may not be the best choice although the cruise itself sounds great. If they are only a few left on the ship the whole time they may feel isolated.

So we are looking into Bermuda. Maybe smaller ship so it's not so overwhelming. They don't need a rock climbing wall..etc.. ya know?

And they can go out of NY and spend a few days with us.

The other thought was getting them a suite at the Ritz, or the Mandarin Oriental or Four Seasons in Manhattan for a few days and take them to see some shows, museums and nice dinners..

Re: Wanna Help Me Pick a Vacation?

not sure how much you want to spend. But my parents have gone on a few Tauck tours and RAVE RAVE RAVE about them!

they are on the expensive side though. But well worth it - you get into areas that normal tourists do not.

also check out American Orient Express - it might be nice for them since the can see the sights and stay on the train

Here's a tauck tour to SF, sonoma and napa http://www.tauck.com/tours/usa-tours/western-usa-travel/napa-valley-tour-js-2007
