Want to change ALL of the doors inside the house - any recs?
I love our new house, a colonial (for the most part) but I hate the doors. They are great, heavy wood doors but over the years the previous owners covered them with layers upon layers of paint (and didn't do a good job - can see drips, etc). A few of the doors are also in bad shape (not sure why or how but they ruined the part near the doorknob and one doesn't look like it can be saved).
What are some good options for inside doors? I really don't want the ones that are made of the very thin wood and are hollow inside - my parents have some in their house and they don't block sound well.
Any recs for where to buy these doors or a company that does this? Or maybe I can have the doors that can be saved stripped, sanded, and painted?
Thanks!

We got all our moldings and doors from kleet lumber, they were great to work with and priced so much better then Home Depot & Lowes, they are in huntington

I bout all my doors at the lumberyard, stained and varnished them myself. They are solid pine (a soft wood), raised panels. I replaced the hollow doors and metal doorframes that were in the co-op. You can get doors at Home Depot or Lowes.
Try stripping the paint off of a door to see what it looks like, if they are in good condition then just repaint. This way you won't have to spend a lot of money to replace the doors.

Re: Want to change ALL of the doors inside the house - any recs?
We recently checked out lowes and they have a nice selection of solid wood doors. The installation was $150 a door which included taking out the old one and fitting the new one (this is including the door frame not just the door) and putting the mouldings back up.
If most of the doors are in good shape, what about stripping them then just replacing the doors that are necessary.

We did the same thing and purchased our doors from Lowes. What a process to change the doors! You may want to consider taking them up on their installation services ;)

Re: Want to change ALL of the doors inside the house - any recs?
We just installed 14 Solid Core Doors by Masonite in our house. They were cheaper than solid wood doors and have better sound proofing than the hollow core doors at home depot.
Here is the website Doors by Masonite
We chose a 2-panel flat Molded Door.

If they really are solid wood doors, I would see if a painter can strip sand and refinish for you.. Price what solid woods doors are and compare

Elbee- They look great. Did you install them yourself or have them installed by someone?

Re: Want to change ALL of the doors inside the house - any recs?
we just did this about two weeks ago- I can not tell you the difference it has made- I will try and post some pictures later- we changed about 7 doors and a closet- we had a contracter do it and it was really reasonable
eta- the contractor salvaged the moulding around the doors- they scraped it down and re-painted it and it looks great- you could probably do that with your doors

Thanks! We still have to replace the door hinges - I want oil rubbed bronzed ($3 each x 3 per door x 14 doors!) to match the door knobs.
we did it ourselves. Our friend is a contractor (we purchased them with his contractor discount)> Our friend & DH installed about 5 of them so he could show us and then DH & I did the rest. DH also did all all new moldings on every door & closet.

We own a splanch and didn't think colonial 4 or 6 panels really went with the style of the home. We were tossed between this 2-panel style and the 5-panel style like this below, but we ended up with the 2-panel and couldn't be happier! When you watch TV, pay attention to the doors on the sets -- most are 5 panels- We noticed that after we installed our doors LOL.
