Wanted to know if anyone else felt this way after traveling abroad
I went to Ireland last year and not a day goes by that I don't think of it at least once daily.
I cried when I had to leave - I didn't want to. I could have upped & moved there in a blink of an eye and never come back to America (granted, I'd need my family there, but still)
while US is great, i feel Ireland had so much more - a better way of life, more culture, more acceptance, more laid back, better economy, less poor, tons of programs for their citizens, etc.
sometimes I wish I had been born somewhere other an America after getting a taste of Ireland.
anyone else feel this way?

Re: Wanted to know if anyone else felt this way after traveling abroad
Absolutely.
It was always my dream to visit London -- I've had a fascination with the UK my whole life...the amazing history seems wonderful to me.
DH took me there for my 30th birthday in November, and everyday I think of it. I visit Earthcam.com daily to view the London cams.
When we had to leave, I have never in my life been so sad to leave a place. It felt like home, as if I had been born in the wrong country or something. DH felt the same way. I loved the location -- we were able to take the Eurostar to Paris for a day.....and I kept thinking of all the amazing trips I could take to different European nations if I lived there. (I think Europe in general is amazing!)
Anytime I see things on t.v. that have to do with the UK or London, I feel a deep sadness that I'm not there. I look at our pics from that trip all the time, and it was one of those once in a life time trips that we got at an amazing discount. I likely will never be able to afford it for a looooooong time, since we want to get a house at some point and start a family.
So I definitely know exactly how you feel!

I've been to Europe twice and pretty much thought of the trips every day for the longest. Especially my honeymoon in Italy--that trip stayed with me forever! Six years later, however, it's not an obsession. I'll go back to Europe again one day--and with any luck several times.

I've never felt this way though. I'm not saying what you've wrote is wrong, but you yourself said you'd only gotten a "taste of Ireland." As a tourist, I'm sure you wouldn't have been necessarily exposed to the worst parts of the country. We live with our country's "worst" parts daily. Tourists do fun things and see exciting places...not bad, boring things. I think the grass is always greener.

Yep. Pretty much anytime we go anywhere overseas! We were weeks away from moving to London last year with DH's job but then the financial crisis hit It still makes me very sad to think about it.

Re: Wanted to know if anyone else felt this way after traveling abroad
This is the exact reason I left the states 10 years ago to live in the UK, but for me, the grass*is* greener here (but just as hard to mow etc) I enjoy a quality of live which I feel is much better (ie 9 months paid maternity leave, the NHS, and today I got a call from HR at my company telling me they will be paying for my childcare in full while I am on maternity leave) but there are downsides as well. The thing that keeps me here is my amazing group of friends (my adopted family) and the fact that for some strange reason, I feel amazingly at home in this grey, rainy country! Can't quite explain it!
I have to add though as a tourist I don't feel that you would really see life as normal people live it, ie you might not see the disadvantaged, the poor, the social class system, the racism, etc, but I can assure you, it definitely exists.
Also, after 10 years in the UK, I have only travelled to the continent TWICE!!! Life gets in the way, visiting family gets in the way, work and kids are just the same as they would be anywhere else.

Re: Wanted to know if anyone else felt this way after traveling abroad
i was discussing my backpacking trip with a co worker today who marveled that i walked my way (alone) through 6 countries for almost 2 months. it was one of the top experiences in my life, to really check out other cultures, foods, lifestyles, architecture, languages. I was absolutely impressed with the freshness of the food (you do NOT see gynormous supermarkets there with aisles of preserved foods), you have small markets with local foods. There are no gynormous trucks barrelling down the roads bringing said preserved foods.
People have time to cook dinner every night. They enjoy life. They don't pop poptarts into the toaster and call it breakfast.
Really not sure if I could switch full time to live there, I have political differences with most of the governments there. But I understand your desire!

Thanks I'm sure we will but it was quite a let down. I'll console myself by planing trips till we get there permanently

I'm from Ireland and yes, the lifestyle makes me want to move home in the morning. But, the things that keep me here are some of the things that you perceived to better about life over there.
Since the crash in September 2008 the economy has hit the rocks and I think you would see a big difference if you were to go there this year.
Try living there and getting up on dark, wet mornings 9 months of the year, sitting in traffic for one hour just to go three miles, showering with hardly any water pressure, the list goes on, and you may feel differently.

Not to mention the things ex-pats mostly complain about. No mixer taps and no tumble dryers!!!
Also, I think once you live in a different country life pretty quickly becomes 40 hour working weeks, paying the mortgage, struggling home in traffic, the normal day to day stuff. I very rarely have moments anymore when I feel I am living in a different country. The novelty does wear off. Sorry!
Also, I have to laugh because when I spoke to my Mother today I said I had a headache, she asked me if it was raining....She stopped herself and laughed and said, of course its raining, its England!

Sh!t! I just realized it's mothers day over there tomorrow and it's almost 5 pm I called the florist near my parents and they are sold out of flowers and closed tomorrow. She will be getting them on Monday instead, but thanks because mentioning your mother reminded me...

Re: Wanted to know if anyone else felt this way after traveling abroad
DH and I talk about this all the time. We wish we could shop at markets for our food, sit at sidewalk cafes for hours on end, and have 2 hour lunches everyday. Having lived abroad, I know that this is not the reality but we love, love, love vacationing in Europe!!! It's such a wonderful change of pace from the American way of life!

Re: Wanted to know if anyone else felt this way after traveling abroad
Yes, I understand how you feel. Like Racheeee, I also live overseas.
I like it and I like it better than living in the US, for better benefits etc. I actually don't see myself moving back to the US anytime soon.
However, the novelty wears off and it quickly goes back to regular life. There are bills to pay and work to do, so it isn't a tourist lifestyle.

Re: Wanted to know if anyone else felt this way after traveling abroad
When I was in Taormina, Sicily I had a real honest moment where I said to myself " I could live here, I could stay here forever".
I have traveled a lot and have never felt that way, never wanted to move out of the town I grew up in, heck we bought a home 6 blocks from my parents
But yes I have had that "fleeting" moment.
I never have wanted to be anything other than an American though. I could live there sure, but I would ALWAYS be an American.
We are going to Italy this summer and at the end of our Venice,Florence,Rome tour we are flying to Taormina....even though it cost us more than say Amalfi bc of the flight...I HAVE to go there again, I hope it is as wonderful as I remember...

Re: Wanted to know if anyone else felt this way after traveling abroad
totally. I studied in Germany and think about "what if" I had stayed.
although, we have a house in Mexico and I get the feeling almost everytime we visit (and think about retiring there) but I have to remind myself of the problems in Mexico. I do feel a sense of relief when we cross the border into the US.
