Wanted to thank you ladies (and gents)!
My sister and I were leaving the hospital tonight after visiting Mom and I decided to walk her to her car. While we were waiting for the elevator in the garage a woman came up to us telling us this story about how she had to get home and her brothers car wouldn't start so he couldn't pick her up, etc. etc. Then she said she would leave us ID, but could we give her $12 for the cab cuz the driver wouldn't take her without the money. I swear the first thing I thought of were the scam posts on here so I asked her to take me to the cab and I would pay him. She tells me he's alllllll the way at the main entrance and I said fine...take me and I'll pay him. After a couple back and forths she said "Forget it, It's too much trouble" and walked away!!! My sister was shocked and said she would have given the woman the $$$ cuz she believed the story until the woman stormed away.
So thank you all for informing us!!!!

That was me! And I really needed that money too. I walked all the way home from the hospital. Hmpf!
Glad you weren't taken! I can't believe they're preying on people in a hospital

It's sad that we have to assume the worst in people.... and are often proven correct...
Glad you "outed" the scammer, though.

That's quite a walk from North Shore!! Should have cost more than $12...I'm sorry you lost out on the deal but I now understand why the driver wanted payment in advance..

Re: Wanted to thank you ladies (and gents)!
Good for you!!!
I can't believe this happened at a hospital! I hope she didnt find someone else who gave her the money!
I used to do the same thing with homeless people who asked me for money so they could eat. I would either give them food than I may have (my lunch in my bag) or tell them - lets go to a bagel place...
They almost always said no!
There was a homeless man recently who approached me and DH in Penn station. It was late and we were waiting for a train. He had a whole script, and went on about how he is starving and hasnt eaten and needed money. Now Penn station is FULL of food places, and I said - "Come on - I'll buy you something"
Then he went on to say, "WEll, I like to sit down at a restaraunt and eat!"
I said something like, well, I'll get you something to tide you over until you get to a restaraunt, and he said he didnt like the food here, etc (he obviously wanted the money for something else!)
I finally said, "well, maybe you would have eaten sooner if you werent so picky!"
He was none too pleased with us. We had to go wait for the train somewhere else.

I cannot believe this happened at a hospital. What is this world coming to? I'm so glad you didn't give money. I hope no one else fell for it.

I said the same thing...I really hope noone else falls for it...besides the fact that this was at 11 p.m. and it was just a little creepy having this woman come out of nowhere.

A woman came into our office with that same story a few montha back and I'm in VA! Maybe she got people to pay her way here! I didn't give her the money, I felt bad but I felt she was lying.

Good job!
The day we went to pick up my father from the hospital after his heart surgery, we were stopped by a woman screaming in the street. She was begging us for $6 for a cab ride to the hospital b/c her daughter was just hit by a car. We asked what hospital and she said the one my father was at. We offered to drive her there since we were on our way (knowing it was a scam)... She kept making up a new twist saying she had to go to work to get her things first, etc., etc. We didn't give her any money -- and we knew her story was BS.
(C'mon, your young daughter was hit by a car right infront of you and they didn't let you in the ambulance? You want to go to work first rather than to the hospital?)
She also appeared high and I'm pretty sure she was looking for drug money. And I don't say that in a snotty way -- she honestly did look very strung out.

People will do anything these days... They have such a lack of respect for themselves that they would stoop as low as to make up stories like this.
She didn't take you for a fool!!!!!!!!!!!
