Washing Machines
Ours just went, in the middle of a wash. So odd, since we weren't having any issues with it. It's making a grinding sound and not spinning. BUT the water drained out and the dial moved like it was working without any issue
I was looking at the prices of new ones and I can not believe the prices of the front load washers . My mouth seriously went like this when I saw their prices.
Any suggestions on who has the best prices?

Re: Washing Machines
we just bought a new washer and dryer. . . we went with the frigidaire frontloaders and we shopped around a lot!! PC richards offered us the best price in the end!! but it really depends on what kinds of sales the stores are running.

Re: Washing Machines
Can you see if it can be fixed first? Maybe it is a simple part that is broken?

I was just going to ask the same thing as neener... did you see if it can be fixed first?
If you want a new one, why not go with the top loader. I haven't heard great things about the front loaders and for the $$ it just wasn't worth it to us.
We got our Maytag top loader for a great deal at Sears!

Re: Washing Machines
Yeah the front loader is defintiely out of the question.
This may sound dumb, but how do I find out if it can be fixed? Do I just call the # on the machine?
The washer was given to us by an old friend who we don't see anymore, 4 yrs ago, who bought it but decided they didn't need it. I don't think it was brand new at the time, maybe rebuilt.

I would try that first...see who the manufacturer is and see if you can call someone in.
Then I would maybe call an appliance repair person, maybe someone on here has a suggestion.
I only said see if it can be repaired bc this happened with our dryer once, and it wound up being a $15 part and my dad installed it.

Re: Washing Machines
So I called Whirlpool and they looked up the model/serial #'s and the machine was mfg'd in 1995. $65 for a service call. Than if we want if fixed, buy the part through them, than another charge for them to come back to repair it.
Since it's 13 yrs old, I think it's time for a new one.

Something I didn't even think about, but would consider. Thanks!

Re: Washing Machines
We always buy scratch & dent appliances. My last washer has a dent on the side that you can't see & I paid about 65% off list. All of the big stores have scratch & dents & closeouts.

Re: Washing Machines
I have heard the rule of thumb is if it's over 7 years old and will cost more than 1/2 of what a new washer will - you should look into a new one.
Ours just crapped out too in the middle of a cycle. we had to pull it out of the water! blech and bring it to my moms house.
I just got a new dryer from Tommy Fisher in E Northport and he will match other stores. He also charges less for delivery. Definitely worth it if you are in the neighborhood.

Go to PC Richards in Deer Park. They have a clearance section of appliances with minor cosmetic issues and floor models.

Sears also has a scratch and dent store, I think its in W. Babylon. They had much bigger selection than the P.C Richard store.

Re: Washing Machines
I stopped at the ReStore store in Ronkonkoma (Habitat for Humanity), and they had washing machines for under $100, and they all work. Used, of course, but it will definitely keep you in clean clothes until you can get a better one later on.
