watching a siblings child?
would you babysit a sibling's child? as in quit your FT job and watch a kid a few days a week? my sister asked me this today. and she told me to ask my dh, but my answer to her was no. its not feasible financially and i know my sister, it would turn into come over every day and night to watch my kid.
in all honesty, in her head, she knows that it is not something i would consider, but she was reaching.
thoughts?

She was asking you to quit your job so you can care for her child? I wonder why she would bother to ask if she had a pretty good idea what the answer would be.

i think she knew i would say no, but she just wanted to ask anyway. its hard to explain my sister. her reasoning is that in a few months my dh will be making more money so it would be ok for me to not be working.

Re: watching a siblings child?
my first response was no, too. but i'm just wondering why she thinks its ok for me to drop my job and be at her beck and call.
i talked to my dad and he was like, "what?, no sarah, you will not be doing that." which i knew, but just wanted to get his thoughts on it

because it is much cheaper than daycare...
i wish i knew someone who did this..
I actually am shocked how few people have tapped inotthis resource.. MANY people would, i think opt a family/friend taking care of their kid than an HUGELY expensive daycare
but i could never do it myself

Re: watching a siblings child?
i have no problems watching the kid a few hours on a sat/sun or during a weeknight, he/she will be my niece/nephew.
i just cannot justify quitting a ft job to watch the kid

well...if it paid well
and is off the books i can see it
BUT...what happens when the kid goes to school
then it is bye bye sarah
eventually kids grow up and i don't think that you are looking to spin this into a career
although i would be willing to sign up for a few years if the price is right

Re: watching a siblings child?
i'll pass your info onto my crazy sister...wait by the phone for a call
what i'm more concerned with is the pay. my sister has "borrowed" so much over the year, i don't even ask her to pay me back, my dad does. so every week it would be "oh, we don't have it , i'll pay ya next week." and that just does not fly with me

Re: watching a siblings child?
If financially I could do it I would. (For the record my sis doesn't have kids) But if she did I would not be able to do because I need to be more financially secure first.

Re: watching a siblings child?
I wouldn't, but my sister has offered to do it for me if I have children, but our situations are very different.
I made a career change and have been through years of college and grad school and babysitting would never pay close to what I make. For me, it would be a bad choice. My sister was a SAHM and recently went back to work just for the money, not to a job she likes at all. For her, it would improve her current situation because she could make money off the books, stay in her own home and be there for her children when they get home from school.

Re: watching a siblings child?
Uh thats a little ballsy of her to ask you to quit your job IMO!
When I opened the thread I thought it was maybe babysitting a few times a week. It doesnt matter what your DH makes, she has no justification.

Re: watching a siblings child?
no, I would never ask a sibling to quit. If they weren't working, that's a different story.
