Water Bill Question...

We just paid our water bill for Sept-December - approximately $300!!!

This is the 2nd crazy water bill we have paid this year. The summer quarter was even higher.

We have inground sprinklers so i just assumed the high water $$ was due to that, but I saw people mentioning how much they are paying for water and I am starting to think something may be wrong...

We have Long Island American Water...and we're in Nassau cty. We only have 1 full bath + 1/2 bath.

Can you please share comparables with me...

On top of the cost of our oil bill i totally wasn't expecting this!!

Thanks!

Our water bill is $17 every 3 months. That sounds really high. We have 2 kids and 2 adults showering each day, the dishwasher going at all times and countless loads of laundry. I'd definitely have them come to look at it.

I pay the Town of Hempstead about $30 every quarter. We do not have sprinklers or a pool and only one bathroom but two adults, dishwasher, large load washing machine.........I would call and have them check it out. There may be a problem with your meter.

That's high. We pay about $50 every 3 months for a 2-family home with a pool.

While I didn't have to pay for water in my old apartment, this is something that happened to us. My landlord never told me exactly what the deal was but there was some kind of curved pipe coming out of a pre-made square hole in the ground right outside the bathroom, and you could see the water in the hole.

I think one of the water pipes had a crack in it or something, and the house was losing water. His water bill was huge that month. I had no idea.

While it sounds like it's a problem rather than regular usage, you should consider how old your toilets and showerheads are. They were both mandated to low water output by the government. Old toilets use 5 gallons of water per flush Chat Icon whereas the newer ones are 1.5 gallons or less.

I hope if it's a problem that needs fixing, it's a quick/easy/inexpensive solution! Chat Icon

Re: Water Bill Question...

Are these prices in Nassau or Suffolk?
With the exception of the OP, everyone seems to have very low bills.
I'm in Suffolk and ours is only about $60 every 3 months which I thought was low, but after seeing this post I don't think it is.
We have a very small house. No dishwasher, no sprinklers, no pool and only 2 people using the water.
How do I go about getting the meter read?

Sorry to hi-jack!

TIA

Suffolk - anywhere from $35-55 and I can't remember if that's every 3 months or every other month.

Re: Water Bill Question...

wawnc...we have a 6 zone IGS system and 2 baths, just two of us. Even when we water often during the hot summer mths our bill is never above $120. We just paid that in Oct. When we don't water, during the winter, bill is never above 45. Something is wrong, please call!

Re: Water Bill Question...

WHen we were living in the house, we had water bills that ranged from 7 dollars to 15 dollars.
