water in my basement....uggh.

OUr nanny just called to say there is water in the basement. 80% of the basement is finished and teh other 20% houses teh laundry room etc. and she said it is seeping into the carpet. This sucks. We only moved in 2 mths ago and we put down brand new carpeting! I know it is for the rain, but can't figure out what it is! or where it is coming from.....

Any ideas? Unfortunately there is a porch over the area where it seems to be seeping in, so I can't go outside and look....

why can't I just call maintenance like we did at the apt??

Yeah, we encountered this problem this morning.

The ground around the house slopes INTO the house, so we had about 6" of water around the edge b/c the gutters were too full to carry the water down the sides, so we had a leak.

DH turned a picnic table over and the water is sliding down that into the grassy lawn instead of the house.

Get vacuuming, you don't want the water to stay down there on the carpet.

Do you have a dehumidifier? That will help a lot. If you don't they run about $100 and are a great investment. It keeps our basement bone dry.

We woke up to the same thing today.

We had to call my FIL to come over with a Pump to get rid of it since DH and I are both on mandated rest.

I was going to say the same thing - that maybe your ground slopes towards your foundation, and/or your gutters are clogged or the downspout needs to be extended further away from the house.

same thing here, but our basement isn't finished.
Our flowerbeds are filling up with water and the water is seeping through our walls in the basement.

sometimes the widow wells around the windows aren't installed right but only an incredible downpour will cause a leak.
Pull back the carpet, shop vac up the water, get some fans & a dehumidifer going.

We had lots of water issues in our basement last year. We have a brand new finished basement which was finished 2 months before we bought the house, we now have to replace all the carpeting because of it. We also called a waterproofing company and yes we found them to be full of it. Especially because we figured out the problem was two fold

1: our back gutters were clogged (we actually need new gutters) which was causing water along the back wall of the basement and

2: We live on a big hill and it slopes from the back down to the street. We were also having water issues on the front part of the basement, and found that there was a crack in the drainpipe that ran underground (our landscaper figured this out) which was causing the water to back up and end up in our basement.

Since we fixed these two problems, we have NOT had any issues.

Bottom line: Check your gutters and make sure they are unclogged. We have lots of trees in our yard and are putting mesh covers over the gutters to keep the debris out.

We had a leak in our basement and found there was a crack in the foundation. We had it epoxy injected and it solved the problem. For now be sure to get some high powered fans so that your carpet dries. It's important to clean it up good now so you don't have smells or mold.

I'm so sorry this is happening!

I agree with this... today i also had a flood in my basement and it got on our carpet also, between dh and i we used the wet vac, towels, now i have fans going on Downstairs, also another trick is if you have lysol bacterial that kills mildew and mold spray it on the carpet where the carpet got wet and also spray the basement too and i tell ya it works.
