We are new to doorman living. What the heck do we tip them?

We moved into a doorman building with a super in October. All of my friends told me that a tipping pool sheet would come around and we would contribute. Well I learned that the holiday card they slipped under my door was the 'tap on the shoulder' that justs lists everyone who works in the building.

I freaking feel like Ross from Friends. What do I tip these people? 5 doorman (3 we see all the time 2 I dont know) 2 porters and 1 super.

thoughts are certainly appreciated. My dad said I should tip eachone $50 bucks and give a bottle of wine, but I have ZERO clue.

Hmmmmm, can you ask someone who lives in your building? Since you've only been there a short time, give 1/4 of what they give!

Sorry I can't help more, Kevin is the doorman, super, porter and taxi driver and he gets squat! Chat Icon

Well, we always tipped the head guy like $50-- since he is the man in charge and the one to get things done.

Then we did $20 each for doormen and $10 to $15 each for porters and maintenance guys.

We had moved into a building on Nov 1, so I understand-- we gave them less than that our first year in-- but when we moved out the end of Sept, we also tipped them since we knew whoever moved in would not be as generous as if they were there the whole year.

We did $75/doorman (4 of them), $75 for super, $50 for handyman & porter, $25 for misc. maintenance guys.

Too much!

my building asked for $75 from each apartment for everyone

that made it alot easier- and cheaper- I would have tipped more on my own

This is what we usually do - there are 25+ people to tip in our building when you add up all the doormen, porters, maint guys, super and conceirge. At $50 a head that would be more than I spend on gifts for my family - NO WAY. My rent is high enough!
