We had a breakthrough last night!
After two years and three months of not being able to go out to eat with Alex without having a complete and total, absolutely humiliating meltdown, we finally went out together and had a drama-free dinner together!
Alex sat in the booth with me and read some of her books, flirted with all the other diners in the restaurant, played with the napkins, sugar packets and ice, and ate part of her dinner. Granted, DH had to remove her once because she started screaming at the top of her lungs NOOOOOO when he wouldn't let her cut her own meal, but she quickly calmed down, came back in and sat down like a little angel.
And, of course, in the middle of dinner, she turned to me and said, "I'm happy mommy" I guess the poor girl was feeling just as suffocated as we were

Re: We had a breakthrough last night!
Beth - in Talia's school they make soup often and so they give the kids plastic knives to cut the veggies with.
Now, whenever we go out to eat I ask for a plastic knife and allow T to cut her own food (of course I make it small enough and let her THINK she is making a difference by sticking a knife into the food). Not only does it keep her busy but it makes her feel independent and like one of the grown ups.
I am thrilled she gave you a break and you had a good time. You deserve it!!!

You know, come to think of it, she's always coming home with something they cooked in school, like soup, so I guess that's why she's so adamant on doing it herself, because she ALREADY IS at school! GREAT idea, I'll do that next time we go out to eat.
Ohhh you hear that, I'm hopeful enough to say NEXT time!
