We had our first sleepless night last night...
Poor Ava, she had such a gassy little belly last night. She was so uncomfortable, and no matter what we did, we just couldn't get her to settle down. Finally, at 8 this morning, she fell asleep. She just woke up for her first bottle of the day, and I'm waiting to hear back from the ped. to ask what we can give her if she gets gassy again. I'm trying to figure out if I ate anything that may have given her a belly ache. I'm very overwhelmed today.

Re: We had our first sleepless night last night...
Ahhh, I remember those days sooooooo well. I think I've become the resident expert on gassy babies because my daughter had the worst, I mean, seriously, the WORST gas imaginable for about 3 months. Many babies develop bad gas after about 3 weeks and usually it goes away by 3 months, when their digestive systems matures.
Some people say it's a myth that what you eat affects baby when BFing, but I don't care what they say, I noticed drastic changes in my daughter! While I was BFing, I couldn't have any dairy and I had to limit my veggies intake. The more veggies I ate, the more miserable she became. And, also, caffeine and tomatoes. Those were the worst.
Otherwise, generally, for gas, here are some of the things I did that helped with Alex:
- Put her on her left side and pump her legs. It may help release trapped gas bubbles.
- If your production of milk is overly abundant, that may cause additional gas so if that's the case, it may help to pump or express a little milk before BFing
- Your little girl may be too small just yet, but when she's a little bigger, try the swing. It was one of the only things that helped distract Alex from the gas pains
- Place your little girl across your legs, belly down. The pressure on her tummy may alleviate some of the gas pains
- The superman hold - place her face down on your forearm with her hed in the palm of your hand. The pressure on her belly from your forearm will help.
- Mylicon drops may help, but use them consistently.
- Some people have success with the 5 "s's" - swaddle, shush, sway... hmmm, can't remember the other two, but it's from secrets of the baby whisperer. The theory is that you try to mimick the womb experience by swaddling them tight, movement and making a lot of noise. Some people swear by white noise - vacuuem cleaner, hairdryer, dryer, etc.
- Baby carrier - the only time Alex would calm down from gas is when I'd put her in the baby carrier and walk around. She would fall asleep in minutes usually.
Good luck!

I'm sure the ped. will say you can give her some Mylicon drops. Poor Ava. Try to get some rest when she goes back to sleep.

Re: We had our first sleepless night last night...
Thank you SO much Beth. We tried a bunch of those things last night, and there were actually a bunch of times when she would fall asleep, but as soon as we'd put her down, she'd wake up screaming again. We tried the swing for the first time last night, and that seemed to work for a while. I mean, she's a baby, so I know she's going to have nights like this, but I felt so bad that I couldn't really do anything to help her

The leg pumping helps a lot. I believe that what you eat can easily effect your BM. If you are noticing that certain items effect the baby then cut them out of your diet.

I agree. I found out through trial and error that artichokes and broccoli give my DD gas. However, garlic and onions do not give her gas.

I agree with everything beth suggested..Jacob also had the worst, most horrific, gas too for 3 months.. I hope she feels better soon and that it doesnt last for 3 months..

Great tips Beth. I would also add if you can feed her at more of a 90 degree angle that will also alleviate gas.

Re: We had our first sleepless night last night...
Our DD was terribly gassy and it HAS gotten better as we are approaching 3 months. I exclusively breastfeed and was blaming everything on what I ate but found out there was NO rhyme or reason for her gas by my food intake... PLEASE try not to feel blame and guilt about what you are eating unless it is a ton of caffeine, fried and junk foods and fake sugars which I eat none of!
My mom told me my brother was the same exact way as our DD and he was formula fed so it probably has nothing to do with what you are eating. Newborns tiny tummies and immature digestive systems take a few months to regulate.
We found walking her around, gently rocking her, wearing her in the sling offer some relief. Hang in there it WILL get better

Re: We had our first sleepless night last night...
I didn't BF but Hayley had horrible gas! She lived on Mylicon drops. Even when the Dr put her on Gentlease (formula made for gassy, fussy babies) it didn't help.
I hope it getts better for you and you get some sleep

I'm sorry - it seems to come with the territory. They;ll probably tell you to try Mylicon.

Re: We had our first sleepless night last night...
Thanks ladies She slept like a champ last night and I didn't have to give her any mylicon drops or anything else. I am sure we will have other gassy, sleepless nights, but it was good to see her back to herself last night. It broke my heart to see her so upset the other night
