We put our dog to sleep-tremendous guilt
He was very ill at the end. Regurgitating up to a dozen times a day, not eating, wasting away. Developed pneumonia. The work to keep the house clean and keep him comfortable was getting unbearable. There were times I wished for the end just to preserve my sanity. We also have a newborn in the house so he wasn't getting the attention that he once did. His decline was so swift I never thought that he wouldn't be here. I keep running through all of the moments that I was dismissive, or I yelled because of the puking and I feel horrible. We loved him so much and putting him to sleep was the hardest thing we ever had to do as a couple. He deserved to much better and when I think of his last few weeks on earth I feel gutted.

Re: We put our dog to sleep-tremendous guilt
Don't feel guilty, he had a good life with you. It's the frustration talking.
My cat had squamous cell carcinoma of the jaw. The biopsy took part of his tongue and jaw. Every once in a while he would accidentally bite his tongue and God-Almighty the blood that came out of it. He ruined one of my quilts - but it wasn't his fault. I was pissed, but the quilt was his comfort spot. I wound up putting him down after 5 weeks because the cancer was rapidly advancing and there was no cure for it. The look in his eyes told me it was time to let him go.
After 11 years, I still miss my baby and feel guilt that I didn't find the cancer sooner or didn't do more to help him.

Don't do that to yourself, the loss is hard enough. We went through that about 6 years ago. Our dog was 17.5 years old and was $hitting everywhere. She was a shepard and her back legs were giving out so she would basically poop and fall into it. She was basically blind and partially deaf. It was her time. Dogs know nothing but unconditional love .

I totally get it. A few years back our dog started having issues too that I was getting very frustrated with. We found out that she was having kidney failure and by the time we caught it the vet said she only had a few days at the most left. I felt like such a piece of crap for getting mad at her those times and felt so guilty. I still do so I don't have much advice for you on how to get past that. But I also know that she was spoiled rotten and she was loved so much and I believe she knew that. I'm so very sorry for your loss and hope that you are able to move past the guilt soon.
