We Received a Note Today At My Child's Daycare That One Of The Children Has The Swine Flu....SOOO Scared Now...

My DD goes two days a week to her daycare. She is 13 MOS old. She had the regular flu vaccine about 5 weeks ago (although going for the 2nd part--the Booster Shot on Saturday). I did not give her the H1N1 vaccine. The note states they found out about this last Thursday 11/12. I then got a specific letter to me stating that the infected child is not in the infant/early toddler room. My DH says, so what, all the teachers bounce around so what does that matter, everyone is exposed. I am VERY nervous now!

Just curious how the other parents would feel at this momentChat Icon

Thanks,
Keri

PS. Now I am second guessing the H1N1 vaccine. My Mom's feels its to new to give it to her but now I am wonderingChat Icon

I'm still debating for my own kids but at the moment I'm opting out.

I would call the pediatrician & ask for his input. They may not give it to her if she's been recently exposed.

Re: We Received a Note Today At My Child's Daycare That One Of The Children Has The Swine Flu....SOOO Scared Now...

I took my 13 month old to the dr last wednesday because he got a fever of 102.7 out of no where, no runny nose or coughing. The Dr said well it could be the flu I said not the swine flu, Dr said yea. I freaked out, he said listen the regular flu is by far worse than the swine flu so stop watching television.

My older son (he's 4) got a note home from school telling us there were 2 confirmed swine flu cases in the other class room. One of them is the son of a friend of mine, he is on tamiflu and doing well.

I am personally not giving my kids the H1N1 shot, but they did get regular flu shots today.

So far I am still not giving him the vaccine. I am just going to do all I can to make sure that if he does get sick, we call a doctor right away and do what we can to minimize the effects. I may change my mind about this, though. We also have a case of it in our daycare center but I do not think that my DS was even there on the days that it it could have spread.

First off Chat Icon for the stress

You asked how we would feel. I have opted out of the swine flu and regular flu shot. But I know if something were to happen close to AJ I'd pull her out of daycare.

That said, if this was a note I got, Id call and demand to know if any floaters or regular teachers in my daughters room were in close contact with that class. Its not been that long they should know who was where and when. Have the teachers all received their vaccinations?

Even so, its been a week since they found OUT about it and it is normally most contagious BEFORE that time so you're looking at Monday through Wed of last week.

Given that, I guess I'd still send AJ to daycare and be a little more anal about her sniffles etc.

I know for a fact that my daycare sprays down the entire room with lysol after the children are gone and also wipe every surface with disinfectant. That includes ALL toys - they pull them out, sit on the floor and wash each individual one down and put it back. They put the children in one room while one person takes care of a room and leaves the windows open to air out cuase lysol is STRONG. Then at the end of the night, there's an annoucement for all rooms to close their windows and usually they are left with only one or two rooms to disinfect. This proactiveness on top of the fact all caregivers took the vaccination would really set my mind at ease.

This is one of those times you have to ask yourself how safe to you feel with your daycare? Also if you wish to get the H1N1 shot then I can't see how that would be not understandable considering this event happening so close to home.

Good Luck, this is a tough one!

I've heard the same. I know at least 15 people (my niece and stepmom's DH included) who have had it and their docs have all said the same thing.

I work in an office with @ 40 people. We had a confirmed case of swine flu a few weeks ago. It has not spread through the office like wildfire, in fact, we haven't had a second case. The person in question was in the office while sick (and certainly before he came down with symptoms).

We have a swine flu policy which means that all doorknobs, keypads (like on copy machines), etc get wiped down with Lysol wipes 2x per day. We have Purell in a bunch of different places as well.

IMHO, if your daycare is being vigilant it is not a tremendous cause for concern. Ask yourself how you would be reacting if daycare said someone came down with the regular flu, and then respond accordingly.

It depends on the child. I was in my doc's office the other day and a mom carried her DD in bc she couldn't walk, was throwing up all over the place, and was totally disoriented. My doc later told me it was confirmed swine flu. I don't want my DD getting that sick, so yeah, she got the shot. With babies, you never know how their immune systems will handle something like that -- they could be fine or get really sick. I just don't want to take the chance!

Re: We Received a Note Today At My Child's Daycare That One Of The Children Has The Swine Flu....SOOO Scared Now...

My DS' daycare had 2 confirmed cases of H1N1. We were paranoid, and I called our Ped's office and told that there was nothing to worry about unless he had a high fever (102-103) and cough. He had a cough that was getting worse, but no fever.

Three days later was his 2 1/2 yr well visit, at which time DH (I was not able to go) discussed the H1N1 vaccine. The Dr reassured DH of his concerns and DS was given the nasal vaccine. (He had had the seasonal shot in early Oct).

That was a Friday- the following Tues he had a fever and I took him to the Dr. He was nasal swabbed for the seasonal flu, but it was neg- however we were told that test has only 85% accuracy. He could not be tested for H1N1 as he did not have all symptoms (only one he didn't' have was a sore throat, but tell me, how does a 2 yr old tell you they have a sore throat).

He was home from daycare until his fever broke (2 days) and has been himself, aside from the cough- but that's another story.

Chat Icon Chat Icon ds daycare the older rooms had a bunch of flu/swine flu cases- all out last week....... luckily none of the infant room- but i was also freaked cause some of the teachers cover in the infant room part of the day......

I think there is a risk of it being everywhere that all we can do is monitor it to catch it early.
