We rescued a Pit Bull

We rescued a pitt bull this weekend from a shelter. She (Mya) is a lovely dog, but super nervous and shy. She is great around me, but very shy with my husband.

Does anyone have any advice on how to warm her up to him. We've done:
-treats
-him sitting by me
-no sharp movements
-etting her sniff him and come to him instead of him approaching her

Just wondering if anyone has any other methods or suggestions for us.

TIA!

Congrats on rescuing!

I think time in the beginning is needed for almost any rescue dog. As far as training is concerned, you are absolutely on the right track to start early. I found this website about Pits. It is not an "authority" on it like the ASPCA or AKC, but it has some useful links.

Congrats again!Chat Icon

thanks so much. She's about 2 yrs old and she's very been in a house before. She was in the shelter for a while.

I just want to make sure we try lots of methods until we find one that helps her warm up to us.

I would give her time. i am sure she will realize it's safe soon. Just be patient. Congrats on the newest member of your family!

Oh if she's never been in a house then space is the best thing. She needs to feel safe, and will need to find a place to "den." Since she was a shelter dog she may not react well to a crate, so maybe make a special place that is just for her, with a bed, blanket, and a ticking clock to help soothe her at night.

Congratulations! I rescued my dog from a shelter....it took him a few days to get used to us but now he is great. Get her a bed some toys and just give her time.....she will come around

Re: We rescued a Pit Bull

Aww, you really saved her life. It will take some time. I love pit bulls so much. I had one for 11 years before losing to cancer, and have fostered one this past winter. He was very clingy to me, and more wary of Chris, but with time and love really warmed to Chris, although foster momma was always his favorite.

here is a great resource for information on this breed. I post here quite often, and there are a lot of long islanders on there.

Good luck with your new addition.
