We trying to make the decision , Update
Our old boy really started to go down hill in the last week. We've been noticing the signs for several weeks but we thought we could adjust routines to make life easier for him. The last week he has been separating himself from us, has a serious decrease in mobility, urination and pooing (sorry TMI). He has decreased his food intake.
Cats are so stoic. We watch him for signs of pain but he just sleeps constantly. The vet said to bring him in tomorrow and he'll help us make the final decision. The vet said for us to think about it this way...are you helping him live longer or die slower? He is close to 19 years old and has lived a good life. I just feel horrible when I go into the bedroom to check on him and he looks up at me with those big yellow eyes.
update--
The vet really helped put it into perspective for us and we made the decision to let him go. I can't believe he is gone. Thanks for letting me get it out here on the board.

It is such a hard decision. Only you can decide, do you wait or make the choice? I can't advise you, but in our case, every cat we ever had we eventually made the choice to put down b/c they just lost all ability to function and it was just unbearable to allow that go on. Only you can decide. I am so sorry.

I am so sorry you are going through this. This is the worst part about having a pet. We had to put my 17 year old girl down a few years ago. It was so difficult but ultimately the kindest thing we could do for her. You and your guy are in my prayers.

I am so sorry you are going through this. We put down our pup (well, not a pup, he was close to 15) in September. I have never seen DH cry like that. It is so hard. However, in the end, we knew he had lost his quality of life and was at peace finally.
