Weaning from the Breast

I EBF my son for 3 months and then started giving 1 or 1 bottles of formula a day. I didn't pump in place of those formula feedings, so my milk production started to slow down. I went back to work last week. My son is now getting mostly formula. I only have time to pump once a day at work. When I do BF, I feel he's not getting enough anymore. When I pump, I barely get 2 or 3 ounces now, even after several hours. He's drinking 5 ounces of formula or pumped milk at a feeding. I haven't pumped or BF'd since yesterday afternoon. My breasts now feel full and slightly painful. Is now a good time to totally wean? I've been doing it gradually for the past month (even though it wasn't intentional at first, but now that I am at work, I can't keep up). If so, what do I do about the pain? Pump a little t relieve pressure or just put cold compresses and wait it out. How long does it take?

Part of me feels it's time to wean, but part of me feels terribly guilty. I had originally intended to BF for 3 months and I met and exceeded that goal, but now I feel sad and guilty.

Thanks so much for all responses.

Re: Weaning from the Breast

I dont have much advice for you as I am still trying to wean my dd at 18mths!!! If you feel that you are not ready to wean yet could you BF in the morning and evening and give formula during the day. I never pumped but do know that you will produce more milk from your baby feeding versus the pump.

A good resource for questions is www.kellymom.com

Good luck whatever you decide to do.Chat Icon
