Weaning off Acid Reflux med

Our DD is now 15 months old and has been on omeprazole for the last few months. She is still spitting up 5 times a days, but we want to see if we can start to wean her off the med, especially with the concern of her being on this long term and its affect on calcium absorption. My question is how do you know when you can begin the weaning process. Currently she is receiving 2 doses per day and we would like to reduce that to one and see how she does. Everyone's advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Weaning off Acid Reflux med

Our DD will spit up/ vomit a meal 2 hours after her feeding. Could this be caused by omeprazole since this med eliminates stomach acid and slows down digestion and emptying of her stomach? She is losing entire meals and may be contributing to weight loss which we are very concerned about. I dont know if the med is doing more harm than good at this time and if we should consider weaning her off the omeprazole. There seem to be 3 options: stop giving the med, increase the dosage or change meds. She is now 15 months old and she spits up about 5 times a day including almost every meal at least once. I refeed her except for the times she spits up her evening meals in her crib. Advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Weaning off Acid Reflux med

My DD was on zantac and then axid up until 12 months. At 12 months we slowly weaned her off. She was receiving it 3x a day originally. We first took away the middle of the day dosage. Then we cut the night time dosage in half, then we took away the nighttime dosage. Then we did the same thing with the morning dosage. We did this over 2-3 weeks. This was recommended by her GI doctor. It worked well and now she has been off of it for 5 months. She is doing really well, and her reflux really does not seem to bother her anymore. She was also a huge spitter upper...it all decreased significantly after 12 months.

Re: Weaning off Acid Reflux med

DS was on meds until 20 months... Had him down to one dose by then. We kept him on until 15 months per the pedi and pedi GI. Was on three doses. Then at 18 months he was down to 2 doses. Then I weaned him off completely at 20 months.

It sounds like the meds aren't working very well... She shouldn't be throwing up entire meals still. Sounds like there is more going on or the meds aren't strong enough. I would wait on weaning her off until she is more stable.
