Websites for Apartment hunting?
Where can I find apartment complex listings?
Also, if you live in a garden apartment that you love- where is it? I'm looking to be in western suffolk county- Lindenhurst, Babylon, Islip, East Islip, etc.
I'm sick of living in people's houses.
Thanks!

Re: Websites for Apartment hunting?
If you don't mind me asking, what don't you like about living in people's houses? I live in a huge complex now and hate it so much so I was hoping to move into a floor of someone's house. I just feel like in a complex you're living on top of other people and dealing with many other people's rude/bad habits.
Your opinion would be greatly appreciated! ( I would love to avoid any housing disasters)
Back to your question, newsday.com has a helpful classified section with apartment listings.

Re: Websites for Apartment hunting?
Craigslist and a real estate agent told me the best was the pennysaver since you usually deal w/ the landlord and can save yourself lots of $$$ in real estate fees. we found a nice place That way. However if you have never rented in a home before be prepared for the ocassional neighbor who thinks your the antichrist.

There's nothing necessarily bad about it. . .my landlords now are nice, but they are so lax about things, like the steps that are going up to the apartment that creak so bad when its cold out, I'm afraid its going to snap. We don't have a lease, and most apartments in peoples homes are illegal so neither party has any protection.
In my old apartment, we had to deal with our wacky landlord who would do work on the house starting at 7am on a saturday (on the wall outside our bedroom ) and the huge family fights they got into.
In both apartments, the landlords were too cheap to hire professionals so they do all the handy work themselves and you can tell.
Honestly, I've never lived in a complex before either, so I can't say which is better or worse.
It does seem that rents are lower in private homes, and many times utilities are included, which brings on other issues when you want to add internet, more channels, cable boxes, etc.
Its just easier to have everything in your name- not cheaper, but easier.

Nice, but were horribly rude to a prospective tenant last weekend
I rented in a complex for over 6 years. I loved it for the most part. It was nice to have a pool, a park, a dumpster for unlimited garbage (because we have A LOT!) and there were a ton of kids and families in our development. I didn't like the noisy neighbors though, but you get used to it to a point.
I now live in a private home apartment and dislike it. I don't have a washer/dryer, they won't let me put one in. I had to buy a router to use their internet because the cable is included and I couldn't get my own. When they turn the router off I can't go online, which poses a problem when I bring work home. The parking stinks, they don't salt or shovel timely and they are just as loud as the complex neighbors. They have a key to my place and I sometimes wonder if they just come hang out while I'm not home. I'm sure they don't, but it's in the back of my mind. Also, the "maintenance" isn't as timely as it was in our complex and things didn't break quite nearly as much.
I do like that my utilities are included and I can turn the heat up to 80 and not have to pay for it But that's really all I like. I'm looking to move ASAP.

Try Pennysaver, Yankee Trader, etc. They will list availablities for private residences, as well as complexes.
We lived in a Heatherwood complex and LOVED it!!
