wedding cancellation spinoff...

there was a thread about how soon would/should someone cancel a wedding.

today, i'm wondering about something much smaller... easter.

as much as i LOVE hosting easter brunch and as much as i love preparing for it... and all that jazz.

i'm starting to believe that cancelling is the way to go. as of the last family text, i had a head-count of 15.

my concern isn't "us," my concern is SO's mother. she lives with us, she's 76, she's fragile. she hardly ever leaves the house, so when people come over, it really brightens her day... but it's not worth it under these conditions.

i guess i was hoping that this would have all blown over by now.

i'm not asking IF i should cancel, i guess i'm lamenting that i WILL be cancelling. Chat Icon

It's terrible you have to cancel but her health is more important. I got upset that DH went into work today and his parents live with us.

I'm a last minute type of person anyway, so I will wait and see. I invite people over the week before for most holidays. I'm not canceling or ruling out anything that is a month away. A lot can change very quickly.

I was thinking the same thing. Masses are already cancelled until after Easter. I don't know if we will be able to get together with family for the holiday. This whole situation is so sad -- people getting sick; people losing their jobs; etc. Now we can't even celebrate Easter!

We are practicing catholics and attend mass weekly so we are disappointed about Easter as well. We will be watching a televised mass, having dinner (my fiance and his 2 children) and making it a "family day"

I would wait and see how things are closer to. I'd also hope that these 15 people that would be celebrating a holiday with you would care enough to decline if they weren't feeling well or were exposed to anything. That being said, I will be hosting Easter this year as normal. Its my daughters real first Easter. She was born before Easter last year, but she spent it in the NICU and it falls before her first birthday, so we are taking the opportunity to make up for a lost opportunity.

I'm sorry, but this is not a goodi idea at all.The symptoms can take up to 2 weeks to show up, so there could be preople who have it and do not know it when they show up to your house. And if you' (or your guests) have gone anywhere at all during those 2 weeks, there is no way to know for sure if you've been exposed too the virus.

My family still wants to get together for Passover and there is absolutely no way I am going and I told my DH he’s not going either. I’ll make something for the 2 of us
There are kids and older people and I truly think they are being stupid to even think it’s ok for a get together

I just read an article today about a woman who died without knowing her 2 children died before her. They all contracted coronavirus and were at the same dinner party as the first person who died in NJ. I believe it was said that other family members are showing symptoms. At this point I wouldn't hesitate to cancel.

Yup
It was a mother of 11. She died along with 2 of her children. 4 of her other kids are hospitalized.

I wouldn't host anything right now.

ETS: Another member of the family passed away today.

Our Passover Seders are canceled. Not worth the risk.

I'm going to guess that any Easter gatherings at least in our family will be cancelled.

Re: wedding cancellation spinoff...

My birthday is on Easter this year. I was looking forward to my mom's duck dinner and cream puff cake. Spoke to her today and told her we are definitely not doing Easter and not seeing them until after the social distancing is lifted. Both my parents were disappointed and i'm sure they'll bring it up again many times, but i'm not risking it.

After reading that story about the family in NJ, there is no way I’d have a family gathering even if it was small.

With that said, I am still seeing people post birthday celebrations on FB for adults. What is wrong with people?!?! Meanwhile I already told my soon to be 6 year old that all birthday celebrations are postponed until summer. (I mean he’ll still have cake and what not but it’ll just be the three of us).

I just posted on the other thread but there will be some immunity for everyone that gets it, coupled with treatment and vaccine options. The government is spending billions on both.

That story is heartbreaking and probably the first of many. I can get very heated about this, and I won’t now, but there is a lot wrong with people. I actually think this is the best teaching opportunity we have as parents to show our children what sacrifices it really takes to be kind to others. I would hate for my selfishness to allow my children to do something that could very realistically kill another child’s grandmother.

Re: wedding cancellation spinoff...

I just cancelled DD's birthday party the week of Easter. We had about 35 people coming. I'm sad for her but in the grand scheme of things it's not worth risking my most loved family and friends. I hope we can reschedule in May but if not we will make it up to her. IMO any weddings scheduled from now until June should be rescheduled. I think at earliest we may be out of this mess in May...I can't see us being done with this before hand.

I think most wedding venues are required to cancel any weddings in the next couple weeks because of the ban on gatherings larger than 50 people.
