Weight gain during 1st trimetster
I'm only 9 weeks...I was weighed by the doctor on Aug 1st...118 and again on Aug 22nd...123. I gained 5 pounds in that time period...that seems like alot to me. I have been eating non stop because i'm always starving. If I don't eat I feel naseaus(sp?) None of my friends or family gained that much in the beginning. Should I be concerned?

Re: Weight gain during 1st trimetster
No, I wouldn't worry. Every woman is different and gains weight at a different rate.
I am almost at week 12 and gained about 5 lbs also. Since I have twins in there, I was actually hoping to gain more! My dr. (when he thought I was pregnant with a single, told me to shoot for 4-6 lbs of weight gain, and said that anything up to 10 lbs isn't unusual). It sounds like you're doing just fine.

Re: Weight gain during 1st trimetster
If your doctor isn't worried then you shouldn't be. I didn't gain anything my 1st trimester because I was so sick but between my 12 weeks appt and my 17 week appt I gained 6lbs!

Re: Weight gain during 1st trimetster
I gained 5 pounds throughout my first trimester and my doctor told me that was perfectly normal. You can't go by what other people have gained, everyone's body is different.

Re: Weight gain during 1st trimetster
Everyone gains differently. In my first trimester, I gained 8 lbs. (I think 4 of those lbs. went to my boobs). My dr. said it's completely normal to gain between 5-10 lbs. in your first trimester. Like you, if I didn't eat, I would get nauseous. I tried to eat healthy for the most part, but some women just gain more quickly.
Also, some women gain more in teh beginning of their pregnancy and others more towards the back half. In any event, you're gaining weight for a good cause! HTH!

Re: Weight gain during 1st trimetster
I'll make you feel better - I'll be 9 wks on Sunday and I'm also up 5 or 6lbs. That's a lot for me! I am also ALWAYS starving. I'm trying to be more watchful of what I put in my mouth, but sometimes I can't help it. Oh well - as long as baby is healthy, rt?

Re: Weight gain during 1st trimetster
I thought the same thing when I was 1st pregnant. Between my 1st and 2nd doctors visits I gaine 4 lbs. My doctor wasn't concerned. My next appt I didn't gain any weight and this last one I only gained 2 lbs. So 6 lbs over 19 weeks is not a big deal. Everyone gains differently and if your doctor was concerned I'm sure they would say something to you.

Re: Weight gain during 1st trimetster
what i've found throughout my pregnancy is that your body will tell you what to do. if you're hungry, then eat, it means your body needs it.
i've tended not to have steady weight gain. rather, i'll have a 3-4 day period every few weeks when i'm a bottomless pit and i eat anything and everything in sight! i'll gain 3-5 pounds in a short time and then stabilize and not gain anything for several weeks.
but every person is different, so i would suggest just listening to your body. as long as you're making healthy food choices, you will be fine.

Re: Weight gain during 1st trimetster
Ugh, (I stepped on the scale this morning, at 9w2d I am up about 6lbs. It torments me, because I was already a bit overweight when I got pregnant, so I am really obsessed. But my body doesn't even LOOK that much heavier. My boobs are huge though.

Re: Weight gain during 1st trimetster
So I guess it is normal. My doctor didn't mention a word about so I guess I won't worry until they do. I was a little concerned because my sister who has a similiar body type as me...only thinner. She didn't gain any weight until she was 5 months..and gained about 40 lbs after that!! I just need to learn how to eat a little healthier I guess but the healthy stuff doesn't help with the naseausness at all.

Re: Weight gain during 1st trimetster
I actually lost 2 lbs that last 12 1/2 weeks. I think its because I was heavier when I started out and I am eating healthier - more veggies and fruit and less junk food. The doctor said it was fine.

Re: Weight gain during 1st trimetster
I only gained 2 lbs in my first 12 weeks but I have numerous friends who gained from 5-12 lbs and it wasnt a big deal. I wouldnt worry too much. Most of us who dont gain have m/s or major food aversions so it makes it harder to gain in the beginning.
And it all balances out most of the time. Once I felt better I had a 4-8 week period where I gained quickly and now its balanced out, I have only gained 1 lb in the last few weeks.
I try not to look at the # so much as how I am feeling and what I am eating.

Re: Weight gain during 1st trimetster
My doctor said 6 was average for the first trimester but anywhere from 0-10 was normal. I gained 2 though I'm sure it's MUCH MORE since then - I'm afraid to go back for my 16 week appt

Re: Weight gain during 1st trimetster
I am only being weighed at the Dr, I don't get on my scales at home, the way I see it if there is a problem the Dr will tell me. I am lucky in that I have always been slim, if not a little underweight and I made a decision not to worry about my weight during this pregnancy, that said I am not finding it easy not fitting into ANY of my pre pregnancy pants/dresses anymore, but as long as the baby & I are healthy that is all that matters. Try not to worry about it, if you are hungry and it helps the nausea then eat, just don't go overboard.

Re: Weight gain during 1st trimetster
Your doctor will tell you if you are gaining too much, and 5 lbs. sounds fine. Everyone gains differently, and some people may gain more in the 1st trimester than the recommended 3-4 lbs. (according to What to Expect).
I know how you feel, I gained 12 lbs. in the first trimester and was worried that I was going to be huge by the end. But for the first two months of the second trimester, I gained much more slowly, so now I'm right about where I should be at 6 months.
Really don't stress about it too much, esp. if you are eating well. And if you feel nauseous, it's better to eat something to keep your stomach settled.
