Weight Gain With Twins
So I've been reading "When You're Expecting Twins, Triplets and Quads" by Dr. Barbara Luke, and it has me concerned that I'm not gaining enough weight. I guess I'm worried since I am underweight to begin with, between 5'7 and 5'8, and I'm at 118 lbs. now (which was after gaining 2 lbs. the past 2 weeks).
I'm about 10 weeks, 3 days, and I'm still not showing and only gained 2 lbs. When did you start showing with twins? How much did you gain with your twins? Did you eat anything or drink nutritional supplements like Boost or Ensure to gain more? Ideally I'd like to gain at least 40 lbs. Thanks!

Re: Weight Gain With Twins
Dont rush the weight gain I am sure you will be putting on weight at some point. You are still very early so dont worry. I only gained a total of 45 lbs with my triplets even though my OB wanted me to gain more.
Good Luck to you and a happy and heathly 9 months

Re: Weight Gain With Twins
I am at the point where I don't want to look at the scale!
I am 26 weeks, and have definitely gained over 20 lbs.
I gained 40 with DD, so I am guessing I will gain over that. I was hoping to keep it close to 40 again. She came 3 weeks early and weighed 6 lbs 6 oz and was perfectly healthy. I wasn't showing and had a small belly until the 6 month mark, then everything changed. My belly is growing very fast!
ETA: I am 5'7"

Re: Weight Gain With Twins
I have yet to ask them when they weigh me at the dr.'s office...but I am getting curious and might break and ask them next visit. I figured if they haven't mentioned anything to me maybe I am ok?! I do know however that maternity clothes I was wearing with DD are starting not to fit me now so I am sure I've packed on a good amount.

Re: Weight Gain With Twins
I started to show around 10 weeks. People at work were asking me!! I'm almost 22 weeks now and I've gained 16 pounds. Both boys are almost a pound each and the doctor said I'm doing fine. I'm all belly!!

Re: Weight Gain With Twins
Im the opposite of you....Im over weight and I was so concerned about gaining a lot of weight. I lost a bit in the beginning because I was so sick....but Im 36 weeks now and I have gained a total of 25 pounds. The babies are growing well...baby A is measuring 5 pounds and baby B is almost at 6 pounds. Don't worry about how much you gain as long as you are eating healthy and drinking plenty of water. Trust me....it will start to pile on at some point.

Re: Weight Gain With Twins
Don't worry about your weight! I actually lost 2 lbs. by the end of my 1st trimester. No morning sickness, normal appetite but yet still lost weight. I only went to 30 weeks but by then I had only gained 18 lbs. And even though they were so early they were still right on target for the age. My dr. was never concerned about my very slow weight gain.

Re: Weight Gain With Twins
i am 5'4 and gained 35lbs, my dr was fine with that, my babies were gaining nicely and delivered at 5lb4oz, and 4lb14 oz, and came home with me remember everyone's body is different, if you are concerned talk to your dr i didnt drink anything extra like ensure, i just made sure to eat about 4 meals a day cause after a while i couldnt eat any big meals i started wearing maternity clothing after maybe 4 months even though i still fit in some regular clothes because they are just so much more comfortable i dont remember when i started showing

Re: Weight Gain With Twins
I am 5 feet tall and was only 105 pounds when I got pregnant with the twins. You could barely tell I was pregnant at 12 weeks...I think I had only gained between 2-5 pounds at that point but my doc wasnt concerned at all.
By 31 weeks I had already gained 40 pounds! I delivered twins at 31 weeks 6 days so I never got to see how much weight I would have gained had I gone full term.
I did not take any supplements or drink any of those special shakes or anything. Just ate normally and drank ridiculous amounts of water!

Re: Weight Gain With Twins
Thanks for the responses...reading them has made me felt better and eased my worries. It sounds like everyone's different, and I just need to make sure my body's getting what it needs.
I feel like I do see a bit of a gut today so maybe it's the start of something!

Re: Weight Gain With Twins
I gained 30 pounds total. I weighed 120 before and 150 on the day the boys were born. Looking back, I wish I had gained more weight so that the boys had more room inside me. I tried to gain weight, but just wasn't able to. I don't think I started gaining anything until the 2nd trimester.

Re: Weight Gain With Twins
I ended up gaining 40lbs with my twins and really didn't gain much in the first trimester. As long as you are taking vitamins and eating healthy, your body will do what it is supposed to. Once you are going for regular OB visits, they will track your weight, so no worries!
