i can only speak of my experience...
i would say to start with your medical insurance. find out what your insurance needs for you to do for them to ok the process.
i got gastric bypass in 2009. at that time, i had AmeriHealth. most of what they required i do was done in about a week's time. i know there are some insurances that require you go through a six-month process to make sure you're serious.
hope this helps. if you have any further questions, i'll be happy to give you info on my experience.
best of luck to you on your journey/decision.

Check with some local hospitals. They hold monthly seminars
Check with insurance and your PCP. You usually have to be weighed in for 6 months by your PCP before starting the rest of the process.
My mom had gastric bypass in 2011 at Winthrop. Her PCP actually brought it up a few years prior then when she decided she wanted to do something, she went to a seminar to figure out which procedure she wanted to have. http://www.winthrop.org/departments/specialtycenters/weight-loss-wellness-center/bariatric-weight-loss-surgery-program.cfm
I have a friend that did the sleeve last summer and lost 125 and another doing it this June. They both went to a Dr. in Great Neck and the surgery was/is at LIJ.
If you want any more info feel free to PM me

Check wo local hospitals, they are usually affiliated with a bariatric in doctor. Once you find the doctor you have to go through a series of other doctors (psych, nutritionist, get tracked for like 6 months and have all that paperwork submitted to your insurance. It's pain but worth it.

My DH had the sleeve surgery done. He started by researching bariatric surgeons online. He found one that is affiliated with Lenox Hill in NYC. The whole process went very quickly for him. He lost about 130 lbs. (he had the surgery in Feb 2014) and it's the best thing he's ever done for himself. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
